Caring for Ourselves Through Race-Based Trauma
A message from our founder, Dr. LaDawn Evans:
“As a Black woman and therapist, I know firsthand that today’s political climate can stir up deep hurt, anger, and exhaustion. Race-based trauma is real. It shows up not just in the moments when we experience racism directly, but also in the stress of seeing our communities targeted, our voices minimized, or our safety questioned. It can leave us feeling on edge, heavy, or even hopeless at times.
One of the most important steps in healing is simply naming what’s happening: this is trauma. Your body and emotions are responding in ways that make sense. From there, small but powerful practices can help:
Grounding: Try deep breathing, noticing five things you can see or touch, or holding something comforting in your hands when you feel overwhelmed.
Journaling or creative expression: Writing, drawing, or even speaking your feelings out loud helps release what you’ve been holding inside.
Community support: Healing happens in safe, affirming spaces. Lean into trusted friends, therapist, family, or groups that remind you you’re not alone.
Self-compassion: Remind yourself often, “My reactions are valid. My feelings matter.”
Healing from race-based trauma isn’t quick or easy, but together we can reclaim joy, peace, and strength, even in difficult times.”
