I’ve had the same conversation with so many parents…

“if people just understood what he was trying to say, everything would be easier.”

Because it’s not that our kids aren’t communicating
…it’s that the world doesn’t always know how to interpret it.

So I started building something to bridge that gap.

Not perfect. Not finished.
But real—and ready to start being shaped by the families who need it most.

“Can’t do” and “won’t do” are both real.
And getting that wrong changes everything.

One of the most common questions I hear from parents is:

“Why won’t my child do this?”

And the honest answer is…
it’s not always that simple.

Sometimes a child can’t do something yet.
Sometimes they won’t.
And sometimes… it’s a combination of both.

Kids with disabilities are still kids.
They can struggle with real challenges AND test limits at the same time.

That’s why I don’t just look at the behavior.

I’m asking:
What part of this is actually hard?
And is there also an element of avoidance or boundary testing?

Because how we respond depends on that difference.

If it’s a can’t do → we support, break it down, and build the skill
If it’s a won’t do → we hold boundaries, stay consistent, and follow through
If it’s both → we do a little of both

You don’t have to get it right in every moment.

But when you start to look for patterns instead of reacting to just one situation, things begin to make more sense.

And that’s where progress starts.

Support and boundaries aren’t opposites.
They work together.
