Happy Friday! 💐🌞

Today we have another TedTalk packed with some REBT concepts. This one is all about how our irrational beliefs impact our emotional and behavioral responses to adverse events ➡️ https://youtu.be/29Vj0-TVHiQ

A few REBT concepts included in here are:

1: Taking responsibility for your thought processes. The event did not MAKE you behave or feel a certain way, your beliefs about it did impacted your emotional and behavioral response!
2: DEMANDS about the way the world should be - and when it does not go our way, it is difficult for us to experience healthier emotions and behaviors.

This is one of Marcus Aurelius' most famous quotes. Have you ever noticed how it shares the message of REBT?

Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) states that our emotional and behavioral responses are a result of our beliefs about an adverse event. The adverse event does not MAKE us feel a certain way, rather, we hold the power to change our emotional and behavioral responses based on our beliefs about it.

Happy Friday!

This is a great video for folks who struggle with wanting validation from others and the strive to be “liked" ➡️ https://youtu.be/LnJwH_PZXnM

A few REBT concepts included in here are:

1: DEMANDS to be liked/understood: “others SHOULD take me into consideration,” “I MUST be right,” “I MUST be acknowledged.”
2: Creating unhelpful demands about the way people should treat us will consequently get in the way of our happiness.
3: Your value does not decrease because of someone’s inability to see your worth (reconstructing negative global evaluations of self).

Let's spend some time getting to know another unhelpful belief!
Catastrophizing, or "awfulizing" is another one of the four irrational beliefs identified in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT).

Other phrases like these may be: "This is horrible, awful, tragic!" or, "It's the end of the world!"

Unhelpful beliefs will likely be accompanied with emotional consequences, like: depression, anxiety, shame, etc.... and behavioral consequences, like: aggression, overeating, substance use, and more.

When we think in a rational way, we still experience negative emotions but with a more functional emotion, like sadness, concern, regret, disappointment. These negative emotions can then come with a more functional behavior, too.

Happy Friday!! Ever feel like someone is just simply wrong? Or that they should see the world through the lens you do? Chances are (like this guy) you may be experiencing an irrational belief called a "DEMAND!"

Demands are unrealistic and absolute expectations that the world as we experience it should be a certain way. For example:
"Life should be fair!"
"People should respect me!"
"You must listen to me!"
"I should get the good seat in the restaurant!"

These statements often amplify our experiences of negative emotions. We may experience anger if we feel we "should" get the good seat, but didn't. By challenging the demand, we can change the dysfunctional emotion that came along with it.

We can work to change these demands by challenging them. For example, where is it written that you must get the good seat in the restaurant? Likely, there is no concrete reason for why it "must" be this way. You may really want it, but there is no reason why you should get it.

Try to challenge your demands next time you notice yourself experiencing them! Demands are often found in phrases with the words "should," "must," and "ought to."
