Looking stupid and awkward when learning a new movement (skill, exercise, etc.) is quite literally, required for you to become proficient at it.
The primary motor cortex is in charge of voluntary movements - when we try a new movement, this part of the brain doesn't know what to do.
It has little-to-no reference, it's uncomfortable.
The result? Overcompensation, over-recruitment muscles.
To put it simply: it overreacts.
This is a good thing! It's a protective mechanism!
But it can make us feel awkward and stupid when we attempt to try a new exercise. So much so it stops people from trying at all.
But fear not, even we personal trainers feel stupid and awkward when trying something new.
The key is to have fun with it 🤓
