Anthony "Monty" Wiggins, Sr.

Anthony "Monty" Wiggins, Sr. passed away at the age of 84 on November 4, 2025. He was born September 22, 1941, in Easley, SC to Bill and Beatrice Wiggins.

Monty's life was filled with love and laughter. He and his wife Linda (Evans) were married for 65 years. His family includes his children Tony (Honey), Diana (Paul), and John (Shelia), grandchildren Laney (Bo), Dustin (Mallory), Brett (Grace), Andy, Luke (Jessica), and Nick, great-grandchildren Sylvia, Margot, Atlas, and Aero, sisters Cynthia (Peter) and Candace (Tia), and sister-in-law Cindy.

Monty loved to tell stories about growing up at the Arial Mill Hill surrounded and raised by his extended family. He told plenty of stories about getting into trouble with his cousins, Terry, Derek, and Roger, and old times in Pickens, SC.

Monty joined the Bates Masonic Lodge as a young man in Easley and proudly wore his Masons ring for 57 years. He was a Shriner and also a longtime member and state president of the SC Moose Association.

Monty's career as a construction manager of nuclear power plants and other large projects took him to places many people only dream of. He and Linda moved around wherever the job took them: From Texas to New Orleans, Las Vegas to Boston, Puerto Rico, and even to Santiago, Chile, where he contributed to the construction of the US Embassy. He was very dedicated to and took great pride in his work and made lifelong friends at every new location.

Monty and Linda traveled together to all 50 states, Europe, South America, and all over the Caribbean. One of his favorite trips was a vacation to Scotland with Tony and John to play golf. He also took each grandchild on their own special trip to the location of their choice when they turned ten years old. He was up for any adventure on those trips, including white water rafting, roller coasters, and spending the night on a haunted ship.

He had an impressive collection of pocket knives and souvenirs from his world travels. Monty loved sitting in the warm sun watching the birds at the feeders in his back yard, occasionally chasing off rodents with a BB gun. He liked driving around town listening to the outlaw country station. He loved a good meal with friends and family (and picking up the check).

Monty had a presence about him that drew people in. It was a quiet confidence and subtle wit combined with an aura of cool and in-charge. He gave off the impression that he might be the smartest man in the room. He perfected the artform of appearing to know more than he actually did. His voice was a soft but very deep bass. When he spoke, people would listen so as not to miss something profound. Usually, it was just a smart-ass comment that would catch everyone off guard for a moment. Maybe he really was the smartest man in the room.

His singing voice was amazing, and in recent years, he sang in the church choir at United Wesleyan Church in Easley. He would occasionally sing songs in public like “Love Me Tender,” “Danny Boy,” and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but only on his terms and if the situation called for it.

A person that cool with such a commanding presence is bound to have earned a few great nicknames. His friends would often refer to him as “Wig” or “Marty Rock.” Whenever someone used one of these names, it was always accompanied by a mischievous grin.

Monty had another side away from all the coolness. It was a deep love of his family and a big, generous heart. If there was an event involving his grandkids or great-grandkids, he’d be there. He was known for his generosity, always asking, "Does anybody need anything?" He loved slipping his great-grandchildren a $20 bill every time he saw them. It tickled him to sneak it to them behind their parents' backs! Monty cherished the moments spent with his family. The thing he loved most was treating the family to a beach vacation every year, watching the kids play in the sand and surf, playing cards, eating good food, and spending time together.

His loss to family and friends is immeasurable.

Donations in Monty’s memory can be made to the Make-A -Wish Foundation or the Shriners' Hospital for Children.

Maria Dawn Nilsen

Maria Dawn Nilsen (née Huntzinger), 63, passed away peacefully at home on November 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on July 10, 1962, in Columbus, Ohio, Maria grew up in Cross Lanes, West Virginia, and graduated from Nitro High School in 1980. After graduation, she began a meaningful career in administration with the United States Navy and Naval Reserves as a government civil servant. She worked at the Charleston Naval Reserve Center in Charleston, WV, the Naval Brig in Charleston, SC, and with the Submarine Group 10 Legal Staff in St. Marys, GA, where she met the love of her life, Dean Nilsen, a Naval Submarine Officer.

Maria and Dean built a beautiful life together as Dean served in the Navy for 29 years, living in several naval communities — including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Omaha, Nebraska, St. Marys, Georgia, and the Greater Washington D.C. area. As a Commanding Officer’s wife, Maria embraced her role with warmth, strength, and grace. She was a steady source of support, encouragement, and compassion for sailors’ families while their loved ones were out at sea. She mentored younger spouses, comforted those enduring long deployments, and created a sense of unity and belonging wherever the Navy took them. Her empathy and leadership left a lasting mark on countless families.

They eventually settled in Bristow, Virginia, where they spent 18 wonderful years raising their family. Following Dean’s retirement, they made their home in McCormick, South Carolina, where they embraced a new chapter of community and faith.

Maria was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and was an active member of her church and community. She devoted her time to service through a Backpack Ministry for school-aged children, Meals on Wheels, and Bible study groups. Her greatest calling was intercessory prayer — she prayed faithfully for anyone in need of support, comfort, or guidance.

Maria also had a lifelong passion for walking, which she embraced as a way to nurture both her mind and body. Whether strolling through her neighborhood or enjoying the beauty of nature, walking was her time for reflection, gratitude, and peace. It brought her joy and strength, and she inspired others through her commitment to staying active and grounded.

Maria’s kindness, compassion, and unwavering love touched countless lives. Her gentle spirit and giving heart will be remembered by all who knew her.

Maria is survived by her devoted husband, Dean Nilsen; her beloved children, Matthew Nilsen, Michael Nilsen and his wife Wally, and Rachel Nilsen; and her cherished grandson, Parker Nilsen, born in October 2025. She is also survived by her mother, Mary Huntzinger; her sister, Leah Barbarito, and her husband Gus; nephews Benjamin and Sebastian; niece Angela; sisters Kelly Huntzinger-Balzer, Patty Ann Ernst, Sherri Huntzinger-Hutchinson, and Christine Huntzinger-Buoni; brother Danny Huntzinger; sisters- and brothers-in-law Debora & Bill Brown, Donna & Stephen Thomas, Derek & Krista Nilsen, and Diane & Bob Boylan; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. She was predeceased by her brother Robert Huntzinger.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered in the hearts of her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charleston, WV. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to McCormick Backpack Ministry (www.mccormick-backpack.com) or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).

Mark E. Johnson

On Wednesday, November 5, 2025, Mark E. Johnson passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife, Sherrie; his siblings Tim, Tashina, and Debbie; his children Paul (Michelle) Johnson, Mark (Karen) Johnson, Christina (Patrick) Goshorn, and Angela (Stephen) Scoggins; and his grandchildren Abby, Liam, Mason, Owyn, Violet, Parker, Shepherd, and Evie.Mark was born in Denver, Colorado, on April 5, 1958. He attended Hotchkiss High School and graduated from Bob Jones University with a B.A. in Biblical Studies. Throughout his life, he served as a pastor, teacher, woodworker, and technician. He was much loved for his genuine care and interest towards everyone he met. He saw each person as unique, interesting, and valuable regardless of their background. He could listen patiently for hours, helping them feel supported and hopeful. He enjoyed spaghetti and spaghetti westerns, classical music, peanut butter cups, sausage biscuits, and hazelnut coffee. He could overwhelm himself with laughter at The Far Side comics, “demotivational posters,” and other off-beat comedy. He didn’t care for anything fast-paced, but he was naturally good at strategy games and trivia, drawing on his deep knowledge of history and nature. He loved the mountains and instinctively knew which way was North, East, South, or West, from which he was sure to pick the slowest, most scenic route. He would spend months navigating a scripture passage, dissecting the Greek text, and recording insights that surfaced in many future lessons and conversations.Mark was persistently hopeful, especially when it came to people. He valued people over plans or preconceptions. He would drop anything to spend time with a loved one, friend, or anyone in need. His accepting, attentive, and extemporaneous approach made him an especially effective teacher and mentor to hundreds of people over his lifetime. He engaged with questions, adapted, and learned alongside them.No one felt judged around Mark, but you couldn’t be with him long before he’d tell you about his own failings. He loved nothing more than to share how God overwhelmed and changed him on June 21, 2000, amidst a difficult season. He never recovered from the outpouring of God’s mercy and love towards him, as evidenced by the deep emotion and joyful tears that sprang up whenever he shared it.Mark’s family and friends remember him as quick to ask for forgiveness, slow to find fault. He praised even their smallest virtues and accomplishments. He loved nothing more than seeing and talking about God’s love for him, and he reflected it to everyone around him. He was a warm, caring husband, father, and friend who expressed love freely and constantly. In his final days, his last words to his wife, family, and all who came to see him were the phrase he repeated most often during his life: “I love you.”

A visitation is scheduled for 9:30am, and the funeral service at 11am, on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Faith Baptist Church, 500 West Lee Road, Taylors, SC 29687. The burial will take place at 1pm at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
