In case you haven’t seen this yet:

Special feature on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper – "Last year, for the first time, the Veterans Administration announced it would begin funding its own clinical trials to treat post traumatic stress disorder, depression and addiction, using two psychedelic drugs psilocybin and M**A. Even if these trials are successful, it would be years before the VA could prescribe either drug for its patients. Thousands of veterans who are suffering aren't waiting, desperate for help, they're attending psychedelic retreats in countries where the drugs are legal to use, mostly in indigenous ceremonies. This past March we were invited to join nine veterans who traveled to the west coast of Mexico for a psychedelic journey they hoped would finally help ease their pain.

The retreat was organized and paid for by the Heroic Hearts Project, a nonprofit that's helped more than 1,000 U.S. veterans with combat-related PTSD access psychedelics."

60 Minutes joined U.S. veterans with PTSD as they attend a week-long psychedelic retreat in Mexico. Nearly a year later, most of the vets say the experience with psilocybin was life-changing.

"...Albert Garcia-Romeu, PhD, of Johns Hopkins University, talks about whether the research backs up the hype; the state of psychedelic therapy research for PTSD, depression, addiction, and other mental health disorders; how psychedelics work in the brain and mind; what the science says about microdosing; and whether psychedelic treatments are likely to be approved in the U.S. any time soon."

I recently came across this case study on the use of 5-MeO-DMT for treating PTSD. If you've followed me on various social media platforms than you may have seen my clip about my own experience with 5MeO-DMT. And I don't want to just always share about my own experience, I want to share the research too.

This study dives deep into the specifics—the how, the what, and the nitty-gritty details that comes with evidence-based research.

Ibogaine has become a buzz word this week after being a topic of discussion on Joe Rogan's podcast and hailed as something to look at for our vets by Gov. Rick Perry... But what is Ibogaine? It's a unique psychedelic compound, maybe a little lesser known, but is notable for its use in treating addiction and its profound psychological effects. It is derived from the root bark of the African shrub Tabernanthe iboga. Traditionally used in spiritual ceremonies by the Bwiti religion in West Africa, ibogaine is particularly distinctive because of its potential to reduce withdrawal symptoms from opiates and other drugs and to interrupt the cycle of addiction.

The experience of taking ibogaine is often described as intensely introspective, allowing users to confront past traumas and negative patterns of thought. It's considered a form of "addiction interruption" therapy. The Rogan podcast did an EXCELLENT job highlighting how ibogaine treatment carries risks, particularly concerning its effects on the heart, and must be administered in a controlled, medical setting to manage these risks effectively.

Stanford Medicine researchers find that ibogaine, a plant-based psychoactive compound, safely led to improvements in depression, anxiety and functioning among veterans with traumatic brain injuries.

"What's the difference between microdosing and taking a journey?"

Great question... microdosing has become a trend but it's a lot different from a psychedelic experience dose.

Microdosing:

What is it? Microdosing involves taking a very small, sub-hallucinogenic dose of a psychedelic, in this case, let's talk about psilocybin. Typically about 1/10th of a recreational dose. This amount does NOT produce significant alterations in consciousness or visual disturbances.

Benefits: Many report improved mood, increased creativity, and enhanced focus without the overwhelming effects of a full dose. It's like a slight enhancement to your normal state, often used in regular routines.

Common Uses: Ideal for those looking to gently enhance their day-to-day mental health without disrupting their usual activities.

Taking a Journey:

What is it? This involves consuming a higher dose of psilocybin that leads to a profound alteration in perception, commonly known as a "psychedelic journey" or "trip."

Benefits: These experiences can be transformative, allowing deep introspection and a significant emotional release. Users often report life-changing insights and a renewed sense of connection with the world.

Common Uses: Best suited for those seeking deep therapeutic effects, often conducted in a controlled setting with professional guidance to navigate the emotional and psychological revelations.

This article caught my eye. It talks about M**A (yes, the one also known as Ecstasy), psilocybin (magic mushrooms), and ketamine—substances that are stepping out of the shadows and into the spotlight for their potential in treating serious mental health issues like PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

These aren’t just new options; they could totally change the game. And because I’ve seen a lot, both in the emergency room and beyond, I believe these treatments might just be the breakthroughs we need.

I’m sharing articles like this and research because I want to open up a conversation with you all. What do you think? Any questions, thoughts, or concerns? I’m here to chat and dive deep into these topics. Because I have to assume there will be. Let’s make sense of this together and think about what healing could look like in the future.

“These medicines have a way of showing you both what you’ve been avoiding and what you’ve been seeking.” - Michael Pollan

I got to meet Michael Pollan at a book signing in Colorado while attending a psychedelic medicine conference. 10/10 would recommend both the conference and his book if you're dipping your toe into understanding the science behind these medicines.
