➡️swipe to prep my favorite snack for the week!

this trail mix is nutrient dense, easy and requires *zero* culinary skill. I keep it prepped & ready. Use a variety of nuts, seeds, dried fruit & extras to keep it interesting & make it yours!

my trail mix this week (all from ):
- dark chocolate
- dried cranberries
- dried blueberries
- pepitas
- sunflower seeds
- pine nuts
- pistachios

Walnuts, almonds and dried dates are a staple for me too! Anything you’d add? ⬇️⬇️

as a dietitian who is a big fan of supporting a healthy gut. a plan to “cut out carbs” (read: cutting out fiber) makes me cringe.

>carbohydrates are not the enemy.< a variety of whole grains, fruit & veggies (yes even potatoes) provide so many nutrients & can be supportive of a healthy gut.

however - some fill up on mostly low-fiber carbs & added sugar, missing out on the value other food groups provide, including satiety & key nutrients 🔑

often people use this phrase to mean they are reducing added sugar, pasta, bread & baked goods. that’s often a plan that aligns well with health goals - I totally support my clients finding ways to build an eating plan that helps them feel their best.

but don’t “cut out carbs”. please? 😊

YEAR ONE ☝🏻

I made it! This week marks my official one year of being in business as Catherine Johnston Nutrition, LLC as I move into my 8th year of being a dietitian.

I have learned a lot about my personal limits + potential, priorities & responsibilities as well as the in’s and outs of building a business (thanks )

this is all (and likely always will be) a work in progress, but I am so thankful for those of you who worked with me, encouraged me & interacted with my content online during my first year building my business.

it’s still hard work, and I still have a *lot* to learn, but I’m thankful to have made it this far & excited for what is to come!

I say this with ALL the love 💕

the #1 excuse clients share for not achieving the goals they want to meet is time.

I am not saying you aren’t busy- you probably are. but what I am saying is you owe it to yourself & those your love to make caring for your health a priority.

this does not mean you have to let go of other priorities, but it may include changing your mindset about your habits, getting creative, saying the right “no’s”, delegating tasks & making the decision to do the less comfortable thing sometimes.

(a great place to start is to manage social media time- the average adult scrolls for >2 hours per day )

I may not know you, but I know this is true. 🌺

where did it start? who or what told you that you had to strive to be a certain size or shape to be worthy?

skinny and healthy are not synonymous. if we truly care about the “health” of those we love, why don’t we check on hydration, fiber intake, biometric numbers, or mental health instead?

mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers, friends - stop telling the people in your life to make themselves smaller so YOU can be more comfortable.

stop modeling diet talk, restriction, “I can’t eat that’s”, & body checking.

start showing compassion, confidence, strength, & caring for yourself out of an abundance of self-respect.

I woke up on a soapbox this morning 🤭

along with supporting my clients with general wellness education, I focus on promoting gut health & supporting lifestyle management of bowel disorder & disease.

crohn’s & colitis has a special place in my heart 💜

after years of encountering *many* people who felt unsupported & often lost when it came to caring for themselves with IBD, I decided to invest in my own education as a nutrition provider to better support these clients.

With over 3.1 million Americans being affected by ibd (includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) - evidence-based support and caring well for this population is much needed.

thankful for the feedback from this kind client who I now consider a friend 💜

let me start by saying - I really love candy. 🍬

in a recent conversation, someone was trying to brainstorm all of the ways she could eliminate chocolate from her life after feeling like she was emotionally overeating it consistently. substitutions, restriction, and other strategies…

but then I asked her - what if you just have a piece, & actually let yourself enjoy it mindfully? 🍫

she paused - and when she spoke again, she was calm & there was relief in her voice.
“I’ve never thought of that.”

doing this, along with a few other lifestyle strategies (hydration, macro composition of meals, sleep/stress management etc) was exactly what she needed - not a restriction-based mindset.

in a culture ALL about rigid extremes, we are missing out on the healthy middle ground, and unfortunately this is causing more harm to mental & physical health.

➡️so - eat the candy (or other favorite treat), but check-in with yourself to see if you actually want it. Choose your favorite kind, go somewhere peaceful, put away your phone and distractions, and enjoy it.
stop when you’re satisfied/done, which may or may not be when it is gone.

this was one of my favorite wins yet! 🥳

do you often scroll through social media or see someone else’s body changing & wonder “I wonder what she’s doing? I’ve got to try that.”

If so, you may be stuck in a chronic dieting cycle.

restrictive dieting isn’t only a metabolism killer, but can negatively impact your health - including affecting your heart health labs, increase inflammation & can destroy your mental health. diets can also make you inhospitable, affect your sleep & your body image issues can hurt those around you.

as a health professional who has walked with many people to meet their health goals without crazy restriction while honoring their cultural and personal preferences, these ridiculous programs/systems/etc are super frustrating. you deserve so much better than that.

hungry but noticing that just a piece just doesn’t *quite* satisfy your snack craving through the afternoon?

that’s because fruit has carbs, which provide a short-term energy boost, but lacks fat & protein that can satisfy your hunger a little longer.

try adding a handful of nuts or couple of tablespoons of nut butter to your next fruity snack to give yourself more balance in your snack & satisfy your hunger!

don’t be afraid to get creative based on the flavors you’re loving -
one of my favorite snacks is a sliced apple + peanut butter + dark chocolate chunks 😍
