Black men in the U.S. have a significantly lower life expectancy than other groups — with prostate cancer being a key factor, according to the 2025 “Real Face of Men’s Health” report released this week.

The study, by the Movember Foundation of Men’s Health and the Penn Nursing Program, revealed that Black men live an average of 69.1 years in the U.S. as compared to 76.5 years for African American women.

By comparison, non-Hispanic white men live on average in the United States to age 75.1, and age 80.1 for non-Hispanic white women. Asian American men live most often to the age of 82.3, with Asian American women living until 86.3, and Hispanic men live most often until age 77, while Hispanic women live until age 82.3 on average.

Native American and Alaskan men have the shortest average life span in the U.S., with men living until 64.5 and women living to 71.3.

The report took a look at the lives of 4,126 men in the U.S., across the nation’s demographic lines, including geography, socioeconomics, race, ethnicity and sexual orientation. It is the first report to describe the state of men’s health in the nation.

Researchers found that for more than a century, men have died younger than women, and in recent decades, they have also fallen far behind the average lifespans of men in other wealthy nations.

The leading causes of death for men in the U.S. included heart disease and cancer — primarily lung cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer and pancreatic cancer, according to data in the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
