Congratulations Marta and Les!

Saturday’s First Aid Class was more than a hands-on lesson in lifesaving skills; it became a moment to celebrate what makes Lyme so special: neighbors showing up for one another and taking action to keep our community safe.

During the class, we had the joy of recognizing two incredible community members, Marta and Les, who have officially completed all of our life-saving education classes at Lyme EMS.

We are so honored to recognize Marta and Les for their commitment to completing all of our life-saving education classes. Taking the time to learn how to respond in an emergency is one of the most powerful gifts you can give to your loved ones and your community.

At Lyme EMS, we believe that every neighbor who learns CPR, bleeding control, and first-aid skills becomes a vital link in our collective safety net.

"Thank you, Marta and Les, for being true lifesaving champions! You’ve taken those skills to heart and, in doing so, you’ve made Lyme a safer place for everyone.”
- Lyme EMS, Deputy Chief Ariana Eaton

At Lyme EMS, our free Community Education classes are designed to help everyone feel confident when minutes matter. Whether it’s performing CPR, controlling severe bleeding, or knowing what to do while waiting for EMS to arrive, these skills truly save lives right here in Lyme and beyond.

Please keep spreading the word and encouraging friends, neighbors, and family members to join our free Community Education classes. Every trained hand strengthens our community, and together, we can save lives. 💙

Meet Your Responder: Jason.
Carpenter, gardener, kyaker, and one of Lyme EMS’s top responders!

Jason joined Lyme EMS in 2021 with one goal in mind:
The next time he came upon an emergency, he’d know what to do.

Years earlier, he found himself at the scene of a serious accident. With no medical training, he relied on skills he’d learned long ago as a Scout. That moment stayed with him and ultimately inspired him to become a certified EMR and step up as a volunteer for our community.

Today, Jason is one of our most dedicated responders, always ready to help and often caring for our Hadlyme station and ambulance “like it’s his own,” says Deputy Chief Ariana Eaton.

By day, he’s a talented housewright and remodeler. By night (or whenever duty calls), he’s one of our dependable volunteer responders. And when he’s off the clock, you’ll find him gardening, hiking, or kayaking—his favorite ways to connect with the land he loves.
“It’s one of the reasons I love our area so much,” he says.

Thank you, Jason, for your warmth, compassion, and unwavering commitment. 💙

If you’ve ever wondered whether you could make a difference… you can.
👉 You don’t need medical experience to join Lyme EMS. We train you for free.

Pride runs deep at Lyme EMS, just ask Chief Steve Olstein! 💙
To celebrate 50 years of service, Steve’s showing off his temporary Lyme EMS Star of Life tattoo, a fun nod to a symbol of care, compassion, and healing that has evolved much like our own logo. Steve’s tattoo may fade, but our commitment to our community never will.

Fun Fact:
The universal Emergency Medical Services (EMS) symbol was introduced 50 years ago to replace the orange cross, which was often mistaken for the Red Cross emblem. The new design, known as the Star of Life, features six points, each representing a key stage in emergency care. At its center is the Rod of Asclepius, a staff with a serpent coiled around it, which has long been a symbol of healing and compassionate care. It is named after Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.

Six critical functions of emergency medical services:
1️⃣ Detection: recognizing a medical emergency
2️⃣ Reporting: calling for professional help
3️⃣ Response: EMS personnel and vehicles arriving at the scene
4️⃣ On-Scene Care: providing immediate medical care
5️⃣ Care in Transit: Providing medical care while transporting the patient
6️⃣ Transfer to Definitive Care: Transferring the patient to a hospital for specialized treatment

As we celebrate 50 years of service, we’re proud to evolve our logo from the Lyme Ambulance Association to Lyme Emergency Medical Services (EMS), a name that honors our legacy and reflects the comprehensive emergency medical services we provide today.

💙 Caring for our community since 1975.
