April is Autism Awareness Month, a time to celebrate the unique strengths and talents of children with autism!

✨What is autism?

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. It affects how people interact with others and causes challenges with social skills, repetitive movements or restrictive behaviors, and speech/nonverbal communication. Autism causes a variety of symptoms and challenges and each person with autism has their own set of strengths and challenges. The average age of diagnosis in the U.S. is around 5 years old but symptoms and signs usually appear by 2 or 3 years of age. Symptoms typically last throughout a person’s life but can improve over time with appropriate therapy.

If you think your child is showing signs or symptoms of autism, make an appointment to speak with your pediatrician.
