Basic Life Support and the recognition of cardiac arrest is the most single most important step besides the actual performance of CPR. Typical response time from the 911 call to first responders arriving on the scene is averaged to be 8 minutes.

The medical staff from the Buffalo Bills started performing CPR less than 1 minute after Hamlin suddenly collapsed because they recognized the symptoms of cardiac arrest. The symptoms are no breathing AND no pulse. Research has shown that the quick recognition of symptoms and the performance of CPR along with the use of an AED increases the chances of survival significantly which we seen that day Hamlin collapsed on the field and is now released from the hospital.

As a American Heart Instructor teaching CPR for over 10 years I advocate that EVERYONE be trained in CPR. Many lives could've been saved if bystanders like you knew how to recognize the symptoms and perform CPR BEFORE first responders arrive! Get trained and save a life!

Hands only CPR with an AED can save a life. Anybody can do it! No breaths just compressions! I volunteered at this event to teach Hands Only because I want to teach people it's better to do something than nothing when a person collapses and is not breathing.
