For the last 6 months I have been taking a class in Dayton to become certified in reflexology - a holistic therapy rarely understood and underused around us.

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, and ears. These points correspond to different organs and systems in the body. It aims to promote relaxation, relieve stress, and improve overall well-being 🧘‍♀️.
Last week we completed our clinical exams.
All the students in my class were nurses wanting to expand their knowledge and offer more holistic care to their patients.
I am so excited to be able to learn these new skills and offer them as a complimentary treatment for a better health outcome.
Certified Clinical Reflexologist 🙌

Let’s Talk About Veins, Baby!
The Underrated Highways of the Human Body

While arteries often steal the spotlight, veins are the real underdogs of the circulatory world — quietly returning blood to the heart, defying gravity, and working hand-in-hand with your lymphatic system to keep you alive, oxygenated, and detoxed.

Here’s everything you didn’t know you needed to know about these blue-hued beauties:

1. What Exactly Are Veins?

Veins are blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood from your tissues back to the heart (except for the pulmonary vein, which carries oxygenated blood from the lungs — a fun twist!).

They have thinner walls than arteries and rely on valves to prevent blood from flowing backward — especially in your legs where gravity tries to fight them daily!

2. How Are Veins Linked to the Lymphatic System?

Think of your veins and lymphatic vessels as two sets of parallel drainage systems:
• Veins carry blood.
• Lymphatic vessels carry a clear fluid called lymph made up of proteins, cellular waste, and immune cells.

The connection point? The subclavian veins — where lymph is ultimately emptied back into your bloodstream. Without healthy veins, lymph can’t complete its journey!

Study Reference:
• Olszewski, W.L. (2003). The lymphatic system in body homeostasis: physiological conditions. Lymphatic Research and Biology.
• Rockson, S.G. (2001). The unique biology of lymphatic edema. Lymphatic Research and Biology.

3. Veins Are Smartly Designed Against Gravity

In your legs, veins work with muscle contractions (your calf muscles especially) to pump blood back to the heart — a system sometimes called the muscle pump. That’s why movement is essential!

Fun Fact: Your veins have one-way valves that work like trapdoors. When they weaken or fail, you get varicose veins.

4. Veins Store Most of Your Blood!

At any given time, nearly 70% of your blood volume is in your veins. They are called capacitance vessels because they expand and store blood — sort of like the body’s blood banks.

5. Lymph Can’t Flow Without Vein Cooperation

Your lymphatic fluid is filtered through lymph nodes and eventually empties into the venous system, specifically into the right and left subclavian veins. If the veins are congested, inflamed, or compressed — lymph drainage suffers.

This is why therapies like manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and movement-based lymph flow also indirectly support venous return.

6. Blue Blood? Not Quite.

Veins appear blue under the skin due to how light penetrates and reflects — but the blood in veins is actually dark red, just low in oxygen!

7. Vein Health = Lymph Health

Poor venous return can lead to fluid retention, heaviness in the legs, and a stagnant lymph system. For example:
• Chronic venous insufficiency often coexists with secondary lymphedema.
• After surgeries (especially involving lymph node removal), your veins and lymph system need extra care.

Tips to Love Your Veins (and Lymph):
• Move often – walking activates your muscle pump!
• Elevate your legs – especially after long days.
• Dry brushing and MLD – stimulate superficial lymph & vein pathways.
• Hydrate well – to reduce blood viscosity.
• Avoid prolonged sitting/standing – static posture leads to stagnation.

In Summary

Your veins are more than just tubes carrying blood — they’re a lifeline that works in harmony with your lymphatic system to remove waste, maintain fluid balance, and support immune function.

So next time you see a little blue line on your wrist or foot, give it some love — because your veins are doing WAY more than meets the eye.

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM OF A GRIEVER 🌿

“When Grief Sits in the Body”

🌿 When Grief Lives Inside the Body Before It Finds Words

There is a silence in grief that does not feel peaceful.
It feels like a collapse.
A drowning.
Falling into yourself with no way to stop the descent.

When grief happens the
Lymph nodes swell in defense,
Underarms become puffy.
The chest tightens,
The gut twists.
Exhaustion became bone-deep.

The whole body feels as though it is carrying a sadness that has nowhere to go.

But understand:
Grief is not only emotional.
Grief is physical.
Grief is cellular.
Grief is lymphatic.

🌿 Why Grief Slows the Lymphatic System — The Science of Grief:

When the heart breaks, the body goes into a kind of survival that does not feel like survival at all.

Breathing becomes shallow.

The vagus nerve tightens.
The diaphragm locks.
Neck and chest stiffen.
And these are the very places where major lymph pathways live.
When they tighten, they close.

The immune system becomes overloaded.

Cortisol rises.
Inflammation simmers quietly.
The lymph thickens.
Everything becomes heavy.

The nervous system freezes.

Not because you don’t feel —
But because feeling becomes unbearable.
The fascia traps emotion.
The lymph tries to carry memories, longing, pain…
and eventually collapses under the weight.

Your body mourns right alongside your heart.

🌿 I believe that grief does not just hurt emotionally

It changes the body.
It changes health.
It changed the trajectory of one's life.

I believe grief contributes to illness-

This longing…
this unspoken conversation…
this ache that never fully disappears…

It sits in the lymph.
It sits in the tissues.
It sits in the breath.

🌿 Why This Matters

Because grief is not a moment —
It is biology.
A chemistry.
A physical shift in the way your body survives.

If you have ever wondered:

“Why am I so swollen?”
“Why am I always tired?”
“Why does my chest feel tight?”
“Why does my body hurt more since my grief started ?”

I want you to hear me:

💚 You are not imagining it.
💚 You are not weak.
💚 Your lymphatic system is grieving with you.
💚 Your body is trying to carry the love you lost.

Your body is allowed to mourn

💪✨ Muscles & The Lymphatic System – How Movement Heals

The human body is a living pump system. While the heart moves blood, the muscles are the engine that keeps your lymphatic system flowing — flushing away toxins, inflammatory waste, and excess fluid.

Each contraction, stretch, or deep breath you take becomes a message to your body: “flow, heal, release.”

Here are the different muscle groups that help your lymphatic system work optimally:

🫀 Neck & Shoulder Muscles (Trapezius, SCM, Scalenes)

Lymphatic Role:
These muscles surround the thoracic inlet — where lymph drains into the bloodstream. Tension here can restrict flow, leading to puffiness, headaches, and sinus congestion.

💨 Diaphragm (Respiratory Muscle)

Lymphatic Role:
The diaphragm is the primary pump for lymph. Each deep breath changes internal pressure, propelling lymph upward through the thoracic duct — the body’s largest lymph vessel.

🫁 Intercostal Muscles (Between the Ribs)

Lymphatic Role:
These expand and contract the chest cavity during breathing, supporting lymph drainage from the chest wall, breast tissue, and lungs.

🦵 Calf Muscles (Gastrocnemius & Soleus – “The Peripheral Heart”)

Lymphatic Role:
The calves push lymph and venous blood upward, countering gravity. Weak or inactive calf muscles cause pooling and swelling in the legs.

🫶 Pectoral & Axillary Muscles (Chest & Underarms)

Lymphatic Role:
These muscles surround the axillary nodes, which drain the arms, chest, and breasts. Tension here can block lymph flow through the armpits.

🧍‍♀️ Core & Abdominal Muscles (Transverse Abdominis, Obliques, Re**us Abdominis)

Lymphatic Role:
These muscles support detox through the liver, intestines, and gut lymphatics. A sluggish core often means sluggish lymph.

🍑 Gluteal Muscles (Glute Max, Medius, Minimus)

Lymphatic Role:
The glutes influence pelvic and lower limb circulation. When weak, they contribute to pelvic congestion and leg swelling.

🦵 Thigh Muscles (Quadriceps & Hamstrings)

Lymphatic Role:
These large muscles pump lymph through the inguinal nodes in the groin — key gateways for lower-body detox.

DID YOU KNOW...

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) may help with diabetes, particularly with its complications like neuropathy, by improving circulation, reducing swelling, and relieving pain.
Some potential benefits of MLD for diabetes:
Improve circulation, reduce swelling, provide pain relief, detoxification, and stress reduction.

Finding a qualified therapist: Seek a qualified clinically certified MLD-trained practitioner who has experience with chronic diseases and can communicate with your healthcare provider.

However, remember, it is not a cure for diabetes and should not replace conventional medical treatment.

Let's talk about your nervous system health...
Did you know LED 💡flickers at extremely high sp*ed mainly due to the voltage fluctuations or issues with the electrical voltage?
While most people never consciously “see” LED flicker, our eyes and brains can still detect and respond to it, and that can have real physiological and neurological effects depending on the frequency and intensity.
🧠 How Flicker Affects the Brain and Body

1. Visual Fatigue and Eye Strain

Even high-frequency flicker (above the visible range) can cause the eye’s muscles to work harder to stabilize vision, leading to:👁👁 eye strain and tension

Dryness or a burning sensation

Difficulty focusing or blurry vision after prolonged exposure

This is often described as feeling like “screen fatigue” 🥱 but can occur under certain LED lights too — especially in offices, HOSPITALS, or retail settings with cheaper bulbs.

2. Headaches and Migraines

Research shows that light flicker between 3–70 Hz can trigger headaches or migraines in sensitive individuals.
While most LED flicker is much faster than that, people who are prone to migraines can still be affected by:

Subharmonic flicker frequencies (produced by dimming or poor drivers)

Cumulative neurological stress from prolonged exposure

Migraine sufferers often describe throbbing behind the eyes or increased light sensitivity after time under certain LEDs.

3. Neurological and Cognitive Symptoms

Subconscious flicker has been associated with:

Reduced visual performance and slower reaction times

Concentration problems and irritability

Fatigue or a “wired but tired” feeling after long exposure

🧠 These effects are believed to result from low-level neural stimulation in the visual cortex — your brain is constantly adjusting to tiny changes in light intensity, which can tax cognitive resources.

4. Sleep Disruption 😴

If LED flicker coincides with high blue-light output (common in cool-white LEDs), it can:

Suppress melatonin production

Disrupt circadian rhythms

Delay sleep onset or reduce sleep quality

This is especially problematic in phones ☎️, TVs 🖥, and LED lighting💡 used in the evening.

5. Photosensitive Reactions

For a small subset of individuals with photosensitive epilepsy, flickering lights in the 3–70 Hz range can trigger seizures.
This isn’t typical of most household LEDs, but poor-quality dimmers, signage, or decorative LEDs can sometimes operate in this frequency range and pose a risk.

Where Does the Lymph Go After Drainage?

From Puff to Flush—Your Body’s Hidden Detox Highway!

Hey Lymphies!
Ever wondered what actually happens to the lymph after your MLD (Manual Lymphatic Drainage) session? Where does all that puffiness and extra fluid go? Let’s take a journey through your body’s magical drainage map—because the flow doesn’t stop at your skin!

First Things First—What IS Lymph?

Lymph is a clear-ish fluid filled with:
• Water
• Proteins
• Cellular waste
• Immune cells
• Bacteria, viruses, and toxins

It’s like your body’s wastewater, and your lymphatic system is the plumbing network designed to collect it from your tissues and send it packing!

The Drainage Route (The Fun Part!)

After you stimulate your lymphatic system (through MLD, exercise, rebounding plate, or infrared treatments), here’s what happens step-by-step:

1. Tissues → Lymph Capillaries
Lymph fluid is collected from between your cells (where waste builds up). Think of this as your body picking up trash from every neighborhood.

2. Lymph Capillaries → Collecting Vessels
These vessels have valves to push lymph forward (like a one-way street!). They move it toward the central lymph nodes.

3. Nodes → Filter Party!
Lymph passes through lymph nodes, where it gets filtered. Immune cells here attack bacteria, viruses, and debris.
It’s like your lymph goes through a security checkpoint!

4. Cleaned Lymph → Ducts
Filtered lymph travels to the thoracic duct (left side of your neck) or right lymphatic duct—the final stop before exiting!

5. Ducts → Subclavian Vein
Here’s the magic moment!
The ducts drain the lymph directly into your bloodstream, at the base of your neck, where the subclavian vein lives.

6. Bloodstream → Kidneys + Liver
Now the filtered lymph becomes part of your circulating blood. From here:
• Kidneys filter out water-soluble waste → p*e it out!
• Liver handles fat-soluble toxins and waste → p**p it out!

And voilà!
Your lymph just became waste… and left your body.
Flush complete!

That’s Why You Might Notice…
• More p*eing after a session
• Increased bowel movements
• Feeling thirsty
• Fatigue (your body is processing the detox!)
• Reduced swelling or puff
