Neuropathy is nerve damage that can be caused by diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, infections, injuries, toxins, or inherited conditions. The most common cause is diabetes. When blood sugar stays elevated, blood vessels can narrow and reduce circulation. Over time, that reduced blood flow can damage the nerves in the feet.

Neuropathy can feel different for everyone. Some people experience numbness, tingling, burning, aching, or sharp shooting pain. Others may lose sensation in part of their feet or lower legs, making it difficult to notice injuries. Because of this loss of feeling, daily foot checks are very important. Look at the tops and bottoms of your feet, your toes, nails, and between the toes. Even a small cut or puncture can go unnoticed and lead to infection.

Wearing shoes or non-slip slippers, keeping feet protected, and checking footwear for moisture or debris can help prevent injuries.

Your feet work hard for you every day. When something feels off, do not ignore it.

Ongoing foot pain, numbness or tingling, thick or discolored toenails, cracks that will not heal, or changes in skin color can be signs of bigger issues. Catching foot problems early can help prevent pain, infections, and mobility challenges down the road.

If your feet are trying to tell you something, we're here to help you stay comfortable and moving with confidence.

My wonderful colleagues advocating for what is right! The current law in Rhode Island prohibits nurses (even with national foot care certification) from providing home foot care.

I am very proud of my friend/colleague, Tina (lives in RI) and my friend/colleague, Kate (lives in MA) for advocating for the older adults in RI. They have rock stars in front of the senate and the legislature!
