❕FAQ: Understanding Weekly Care Hours & Plans of Care❕
How are weekly care hours determined?
Weekly care hours are determined by state policy, not by the agency or case manager. These policies are applied consistently to all families and are reviewed during your annual Plan of Care.
⸻
How many hours are approved if parents are not working?
If both parents are unemployed, or if only one parent is employed, the state allows UP TO:
• 20 hours per week
This reflects part-time or limited caregiving needs under state guidelines.
⸻
How many hours are approved if both parents are working?
If both parents are employed full-time, the state allows UP TO:
• 40 hours per week
This supports families who need full-time caregiving due to work obligations.
⸻
How are hours determined for school-aged children?
For children who attend school, hours are typically approved for:
• Before-school care
• After-school care
The total number of hours depends on the parents’ work schedules and the child’s school hours.
⸻
What is an alternate schedule?
An alternate schedule is used for school-aged children when school is not in session (such as summer break, holidays, or extended school closures).
This allows care to continue during times when children are home from school.
⸻
When are hours reviewed or updated?
Hours are reviewed:
• Annually during the Plan of Care
• Anytime there is a change, such as:
• Employment status
• School schedule
• Care needs
Updates can be requested when appropriate and supported by state policy.
⸻
Who decides the final number of hours?
All requested hours must follow state policies and guidelines. The state makes the final determination based on:
• Employment status
• School attendance
• Documented care needs
Your child’s Plan of Care is always person-centered and based on your family’s unique needs. While weekly hours are generally determined using state guidelines, requests for additional care hours are evaluated by the state when supported by documented, individualized needs within your child’s Plan of Care.
