Henry Darby, the principal of North Charleston High School in South Carolina, went far beyond the call of duty for his students working overnight shifts at Walmart to support those facing serious financial hardship.
From 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., three nights a week, Darby stocked shelves, using every dollar he earned to help students pay for food, housing, and other essentials. For him, it wasn’t just about academics it was about ensuring his students had the stability they needed to succeed in life.
When his story spread, it struck a chord across the nation. Walmart honored his dedication with a $50,000 donation, and crowdfunding efforts raised over $195,000 to further help his students.
In recognition of his selflessness, Darby received South Carolina’s highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto. His actions stand as a powerful reminder that true leadership means service, and that sometimes the most impactful lessons a principal can teach happen far from the classroom.
