The amazing mommas in my mom/baby group were right: “Defying Gravity” makes a GREAT lullaby! 😊
Here I am practicing one of my favorite parts of being a music therapist—turning songs into lullabies (or “lullaby-ifying” them, as I like to call it!). There’s a lot of research supporting the benefits of specially calibrated lullabies as an intervention, especially for premature babies (and their families) in hospital settings. I was fortunate to receive NICU-specific music therapy training (Rhythm, Breath, and Lullaby), where the lullaby—or “song of kin”—is recognized as a core component of the work.
Even though I no longer work in a hospital setting, I still incorporate this approach into my outpatient and community-based work today!

How Music Therapy Began: Healing After War 🎶
Did you know that the field of music therapy has its roots in helping veterans after World War II?
When soldiers returned home, many struggled with physical injuries and emotional trauma. Hospitals began noticing something remarkable — when musicians played for recovering veterans, their mood, pain, and overall well-being improved.
These powerful results led doctors and psychologists to study how music could be used intentionally as a form of therapy. By the late 1940s, universities began offering music therapy programs, and in 1950, the National Association for Music Therapy was founded in the U.S.
From hospital wards filled with wartime memories to modern clinics, healthcare centers, schools, and more — music therapy continues to help people heal through rhythm, melody, and connection. 💛🎵

Forever a special place in my music therapist heart for the littles — and (not pictured) their amazing parents, grandparents, and caregivers! 🎶💛
Music has such a powerful way of supporting connection — especially during those beautiful (and sometimes challenging) early developmental stages of attachment and partnership. It’s truly magical to witness families building those foundations together through creativity and play.
This fall has been full of facilitating opportunities for exploring bonding, navigating the waves of parenting, and creating joyful, musical moments with families at Love Works Resource Center (KOP) and Rising Sun Therapy (Harleysville).
