Improving Employment Outcomes for Youth & Young Adults Through Tailored Trauma-Informed Mental Health Training for Employment Professionals
https://transitionconsults.zoom.us/meeting/register/nTcvg4kYR7i6LJ1-uDO1Kw #/registration
Youth and young adults (Y&YA) transitioning into the workforce face an uncertain landscape. This uncertainty can be even more challenging for those with a history of trauma or who experience symptoms of mental health conditions.
While looking for a job and navigating workforce systems can feel daunting, professionals can engage in trauma-informed strategies to help Y&YA feel supported and safe, making employment a pathway to healing and wellness.
Join us on September 22nd to learn how to talk more comfortably with Y&YA about the challenges they are facing in their lives as a means of building rapport and enhancing their engagement.
We will explore how mental health conditions and trauma impact employment outcomes such as attendance, concentration, and emotional regulation.
Discover strategies to prevent re-traumatization and create a supportive environment in which youth can build self-determination skills (e.g., goal-setting and self-advocacy) empowering them to play an active role in securing a meaningful career that supports their personal well-being and life goals.
About the presenter:
Adene Karhan, MSW, LCSW, is an Extension Associate at Cornell University Yang-Tan Institute on Employment and Disability, where she works with the Center for Advancing Policy on Employment for Youth (CAPE-Youth). CAPE-Youth, a national technical assistance center, is supported by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP).
The center is a consortium led by The Council of State Governments in partnership with Cornell University, San Diego State University, and the National Association of Workforce Professionals. The Center’s primary goal is to improve employment outcomes for youth and young adults with disabilities. This is achieved by helping states and other workforce partners consider policies and practices that help young people prepare for, find, and keep good jobs.
Adene brings a unique combination of mental health, developmental disability, and workforce systems perspectives to CAPE-Youth, exploring how systems can move from a historically siloed approach to a more collaborative, person-centered approach that supports the safety and well-being of all individuals.
