Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital

City on the Hill is a website and page dedicated to Pennsylvania's first public facility to house and care for the mentally ill. Later the name was shortened to just Pennsylvania State Lunatic Hospital, and eventually it was changed again to Harrisburg State Hospital. The hospital served 12 surrounding counties, which at the time of it's founding, had a population of 926,452 in an area of 8,000 square miles. The facility provided over 150 years of service to Pennsylvania's mentally ill, until January of 2006, when it was closed.

The Main Building was one of the earliest insane asylums in the United States built following the Kirkbride Plan. Construction of the building started between July and October of 1848 and was completed in 1851 at a cost of $169,000. Designed by John Haviland, the building was originally designed to hold 300 patients, but with the addition of infirmaries the capacity increased to 400 patients. The Main Building served the hospital for only fifty years. It was considered by many to be poorly designed and a fire hazard. So at the turn of the 20th century the building was systematically demolished, starting with the administration section, and a short time later the patient wards. A couple of years ago, I was contacted by the DHS about a little project that they want to do in their conference rooms in one of the downtown buildings. My photos of several HSH buildings now hang in the conference rooms. With almost all the former hospital buildings now gone, it is really great to see this. It will help keep the memory of HSH alive.
