As a speech-language pathologist, I love using the Usborne “That’s Not My…” series with little ones — they’re simple, engaging, and packed with opportunities to build early communication skills.
Here’s why these books are so powerful 👇
📘 1. Repetition Builds Understanding
Each page repeats a familiar phrase (“That’s not my…”) which helps little ones anticipate what comes next and strengthens comprehension. Repetition is key for toddlers learning new words and sentence patterns!
👋 2. Touch-and-Feel = Multisensory Learning
Each page invites kids to explore textures — soft, bumpy, rough, shiny — connecting words with sensory experiences. This helps vocabulary stick and keeps even the busiest toddlers engaged.
🧠 3. Predictable Patterns Encourage Participation
The structure of these books lets kids join in! Pause before saying the repeated phrase to encourage them to fill in the blank (“That’s not my…”) or label the animal/object. It’s a natural way to promote imitation and turn-taking.
🐭 4. Descriptive Language in Action
Each page introduces an adjective (“Its ears are too fuzzy”) — perfect for teaching describing words! You can expand by modeling: “Yes, fuzzy! Feel that soft fur!” or “That’s rough — like sandpaper!”
💬 5. Builds Early Literacy & Joint Attention
These short, simple books are ideal for shared book reading — helping toddlers learn to point, look, and comment together with an adult. That back-and-forth interaction is the foundation for language growth!
✨ Speech Tip:
Use expressive intonation, emphasize the describing words, and point/touch along with your child. Then let them lead — pause, wait, and see what they notice or want to touch next!
