When kids create fun seasonal crafts like these, they’re doing so much more than just making something cute for the wall or home 🫶

Here are just a few of the skills being strengthened:
✂️ Fine motor skills – cutting, squeezing glue, and picking up small pieces build hand strength and coordination.
🧠 Visual-motor integration – matching, aligning, and placing pieces where they belong helps the eyes and hands work together.
🖐️ Sensory exploration – different textures (like cotton balls or paper) give tactile input and build sensory awareness.
💡 Motor planning & sequencing – kids learn to follow steps, plan their actions, and complete a project from start to finish.
💬 Social & cognitive skills – waiting for turns, following directions, and expressing creativity all play a role too!

So the next time your little one is elbow-deep in glue and construction paper — know that their brain and body are hard at work learning and growing. 🧡

As a speech-language pathologist, I love using the Usborne “That’s Not My…” series with little ones — they’re simple, engaging, and packed with opportunities to build early communication skills.

Here’s why these books are so powerful 👇

📘 1. Repetition Builds Understanding
Each page repeats a familiar phrase (“That’s not my…”) which helps little ones anticipate what comes next and strengthens comprehension. Repetition is key for toddlers learning new words and sentence patterns!

👋 2. Touch-and-Feel = Multisensory Learning
Each page invites kids to explore textures — soft, bumpy, rough, shiny — connecting words with sensory experiences. This helps vocabulary stick and keeps even the busiest toddlers engaged.

🧠 3. Predictable Patterns Encourage Participation
The structure of these books lets kids join in! Pause before saying the repeated phrase to encourage them to fill in the blank (“That’s not my…”) or label the animal/object. It’s a natural way to promote imitation and turn-taking.

🐭 4. Descriptive Language in Action
Each page introduces an adjective (“Its ears are too fuzzy”) — perfect for teaching describing words! You can expand by modeling: “Yes, fuzzy! Feel that soft fur!” or “That’s rough — like sandpaper!”

💬 5. Builds Early Literacy & Joint Attention
These short, simple books are ideal for shared book reading — helping toddlers learn to point, look, and comment together with an adult. That back-and-forth interaction is the foundation for language growth!

✨ Speech Tip:
Use expressive intonation, emphasize the describing words, and point/touch along with your child. Then let them lead — pause, wait, and see what they notice or want to touch next!

way up high in the Apple tree…🍎 🌳

We had a fruitastic time with our Apple unit last week.
Speech targeted vocabulary, categories, colors, sorting, describing, answering questions and more.
OT had fun stamping apples, coloring, cutting, making patterns, scooping, etc
PT worked on catching/throwing ‘apples’, squatting down to pick up, reaching high on tip toes, and balancing with apple baskets!

🧠 Fun Fact Friday 🖐️

Did you know that being able to sit upright at the table without slouching is directly connected to core strength?

That’s right — if your kiddo is always sliding out of their chair, leaning on the table, or avoiding seated tasks like writing or eating… it might not be “just wiggly behavior.”

➡️ A strong core supports posture, focus, and even fine motor skills like cutting and handwriting.
When the core is weak, everything else has to work overtime and that can lead to frustration, fatigue, and avoidance of important daily activities.

✨ Occupational therapy can help build the foundational skills kids need to succeed in school and at home — in ways that are playful and personalized.

THINK 💭 ABOUT IT THURSDAY
Here’s an example of how to correct your child’s speech errors and what we try to stay away from…

🚫 “It’s not ‘wabbit’—it’s ‘rabbit.’”
✅ Try this instead: “Yes! You saw a RRRabbit! He’s hopping so fast!”

Correcting kids too often can cause frustration or shut-downs. Instead, model the right word gently by repeating it back the correct way in your response maybe with a little added emphasis.

This builds confidence AND vocabulary over time—without the pressure. ;)
