Many people with autism experience sensory processing differences, where one or more senses may over- or under-react to stimulation.
Often referred to as Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD), this describes differences in how the brain interprets and responds to sensory information. Some individuals may feel overwhelmed by certain sensory experiences, while others may be under-responsive to input such as sound, touch, light, or movement.
Occupational therapists can help children and adults develop strategies to navigate sensory challenges that affect daily life.
