Let’s improve our grade in next year’s report!

HB 187 and SB 74 would direct funds awarded to Kentucky as part of the JUUL settlement to be allocated toward youth to***co and ni****ne prevention and cessation programming. This would help keep young people from becoming addicted to these harmful products, reduce healthcare costs associated with their use, and generally improve the health of our next generation.

World Cancer Day is February 4th. This is a day to raise awareness about cancer, focus on preventing it, and take action to address the global cancer epidemic.

NACDD’s Disability Network for To***co Control and Cancer Prevention encourages public health professionals to ensure their cancer prevention programs intentionally include people with disabilities.

Here are a few tips on how to get started:

1. Cancer Prevention Screenings and Programs- Offer accessible cancer prevention screenings that allow people with disabilities to be tested for cancer. Provide inclusive wellness programs that give information about ways to stop to***co use and prevent cancer.

Some ways to make sure your programs are accessible include:

• Partner with disability service organizations and/or people with disabilities, health care providers and program staff who are disabled and/or understand disability;

• Offer virtual appointment options
• Identify and assist with accessible transportation to appointments,

• Have a procedure in place for providing sign language interpreters, resources in braille, easy-read, and plain language styles

2. Inclusive Cancer Prevention Working Groups- Make sure your cancer plan working groups are led by and include people with different types of disabilities. This will ensure programs are accessible and people with disabilities are intentionally included.

3. Cancer Education and Awareness Campaigns- Create cancer prevention campaigns that are accessible and represent people with disabilities. To learn about this topic visit this resource Accessible Social Media for Public Health from the Public Health Communications Collaborative.

When a teen is caught va**ng, punishment isn’t the solution, support is.
Suspensions and expulsions don’t address why a young person started va**ng, they only push them further away from help.

Schools and communities can choose restorative practices that focus on healing, learning, and support.
