The AIRR Tech Team celebrated the parade of zodiacal animals who ran the Great Race ordered by the Jade Emperor, in which the 12 animals were challenged to cross a wide river to reach the finish line and claim their place of honour: the Rat, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Sheep, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig -- each was accorded the rulership of one year. Those born in the animal's year have associated character traits, lucky days, months, season, colours, flowers, numbers, as well as a lucky star and season for each. Catherine Yronwode and Lukianos wrote the page with contributions by Papa Newt and Nagasiva Yronwode. Catherine and Nagasiva sourced the images by Ksyshakiss, AV Designs, Red Fenix, sensasilapar, an Unknown Paper-Cut Artist, and an Unknown Metal Sculptor. The AIRR Tech Team settled into their easy chairs today to rejoice in The Empress -- the fourth in our series of 22 informative web pages on the Tarot Trumps or Major Arcana. The card depicts a woman in a loose-fitting white gown embroidered in an overall pattern of red Rose buds. She is seated on a stone bench in her garden, holds a scepter of power, wears a necklace of pearls, and on her brow is a wreath of Bay Laurel leaves, surmounted by a golden diadem or tiara of twelve diamond stars. This card, allied with the planet Venus, symbolizes universal fecundity, nurturing generosity, fully-empowered female rulership. Catherine Yronwode wrote the page with contributions by Papa Newt and Nagasiva Yronwode. The AIRR Tech Team put their altars in order today to honour The High Priestess -- the third in our series of 22 informative web pages on the Tarot Trumps or Major Arcana. The card depicts a woman in a shimmering pale blue silken gown and head covering wearing a triple Moon crown. She is seated on a stone bench between two pillars before King Solomon's Temple, and behind her is an elaborately embroidered tapestry featuring a symmetrical array of pomegranates and date palms. Also called "La Papessa" or "The Female Pope," this tarot card symbolizes the glory of God, female and lunar mysteries, and the Female Querent. Psychics have stood beneath velvet curtains and spotlights for over 170 years.
Not as a trend, but as a cultural movement that took entire countries by storm.

In 1848, two young women in New York -- the Fox Sisters -- sparked what became the Spiritualist Movement. Their séances of mysterious knocks and whispers moved from parlors to packed theaters, launching a public obsession with spirit communication.

Mediums like Florence Cook and Eusapia Palladino filled rooms with gaslight shadows, floating objects, and “voices from beyond.” People paid good money to watch. Some swore it was real. Some swore it was trickery. Either way, crowds kept coming.

As the 20th century rolled in, the curtain rose again – this time for mentalist performers. Figures like Joseph Dunninger and The Amazing Kreskin read minds, predicted choices, and baffled audiences with nothing more than psychology, suggestion, and stagecraft. Even radio psychics took over the airwaves in the 1920s and 30s, giving readings to callers live across the country.

Of course, skeptics had their fun. Harry Houdini famously exposed fraudulent mediums, revealing techniques like cold reading, hot reading, and well-timed illusions. Confessions eventually came – even the Fox Sisters admitted their act was staged.

Yet the fascination never died. People still want answers.
Comfort.
Closure.
Direction.
A voice in the dark telling them which way to walk.
