VCU Pitching Staff Mobility Assessment πŸ“
-
This week we took the pitching staff through our baseball-specific mobility assessment.
-
We assess all of the movement qualities that are important for optimal performance and injury prevention in baseball players (shoulder mobility, hip mobility, t-spine mobility, etc.).
-
Each pitcher will receive an individualized pre/post throwing routine to address the specific mobility limitations that we found during the assessment.
-
Hats off to the VCU baseball coaching staff for their progressive thinking and implementation of individualized programming.
-
Also, big thanks to VCU Baseball AT Anna Reuter and VCU Sports PT Resident for their assistance running the assessment πŸ™πŸΌ
-
Excited for a big year for VCU Baseball! ⚾️

2 to 1 Horizontal Abduction ✌🏼➑️☝🏼
-
The rotator cuff and scapular muscles contract eccentrically (contract while lengthening) at ball release to help decelerate the arm.
-
Assisting with the opposite hand on the concentric phase helps increase the eccentric load, making the exercise more specific to the demands of the throwing athlete πŸ€Ύβ€β™‚οΈ

The Ultimate Arm Care Program ⚾️

For those who haven’t met me yet, my name is Ryan Brown. I am a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and former college baseball player (The College of William & Mary, 2010-2013).

I developed The Ultimate Arm Care Program so that players have a well-designed plan to keep their arms healthy and strong - something I wish that I had when I was playing.

⚠️The majority of arm injuries can be avoided with a consistent arm strengthening and mobility program ⚠️

The program includes:
1) 3 arm care workouts per week with detailed video descriptions of each exercise
2) Pre-Throwing Routine
3) Post-Throwing Routine
4) Recovery Concepts / Strategies
5) Pitcher’s Weekly Recovery Schedule

Following this program will help athletes decrease the risk of injuries, improve durability, and increase arm strength and velocityπŸ”₯

If you are interested, comment below with a πŸ‘πŸΌ and I will send you the link. The program is 50% off from Black Friday to Cyber Monday!

Please feel free to ask me any questions that you have about the program πŸ’ͺ🏼

Thanks! ⚾️

Split Stance Band Rotations
-
As a rotational athlete, make sure the majority of your core training is done in the transverse (rotational) plane.
-
Better specificity of training yields better carryover to the field ⚾️

Bridge Hold Pallof Press
-
The early off-season is a great time to focus on regaining core strength and motor control.

Off-Season Assessment πŸ“
-
A thorough assessment is the foundation of an effective off-season program.
-
Our evaluation process includes head-to-toe mobility and strength assessments. A custom-tailored program is created for each athlete based on the specific limitations found during the assessment.
-
DM to set up an appointment for your off-season assessment πŸ“†

Overhead Press with Mini Band πŸ’ͺ🏼
-
Great exercise for driving good scapular upward rotation and rotator cuff activation.
-
β˜‘οΈ Externally Rotate Shoulders (Forearms Parallel)πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
β˜‘οΈ Reach Towards the Ceiling πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ

Slider Reverse Lunge with Band Rotation
-
In order to maximize power as a hitter, the hips need to decelerate to allow for torso acceleration. As the hips decelerate, they provide a stable base upon which the torso can rotate.
-
This drill develops strength and coordination of the trunk rotators on top of a stable pelvis.
-

Bear Crawl Hold with T-Spine Rotation
-
This exercise targets 3 physical attributes that are important for every overhead athlete: Dynamic core strength, thoracic mobility, and scapular stability πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ
-
Work on minimizing rotation from the pelvis (keep both knees close to the ground). Master the movement pattern first before adding band resistance πŸ‘πŸΌ

Tall Kneeling Med Ball Chest Pass
-
Successful baseball players are powerful and generate force quickly.
-
Medicine balls are a great tool to help athletes improve rate of force development (RFD) πŸ’ͺ🏼
-
This particular med ball variation helps to develop:
-
β˜‘οΈ Explosive Hip Extension
β˜‘οΈ Upper Body Power
β˜‘οΈ Hip Hinge Pattern
-

SL RDL to Band Y πŸ™‹πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ
-
This exercise trains multiple important qualities for the overhead athlete including:
-
☝🏼 Lead Leg Stability
✌🏼 Scapular Strength
πŸ‘ŒπŸΌ Glute / Hamstring Activation
-
Slow and controlled. Maintain single leg balance throughout the movement πŸ‘πŸΌ
