🚿Have you ever noticed that some babies look like they’re covered in cream cheese when they’re born!? That substance is called vernix, and you may want to think twice about rubbing it off right after birth!
Here is why:
Babies are floating in amniotic fluid for the duration of pregnancy, and the vernix helps to protect their skin from the liquid while in the womb.
After birth, vernix is beneficial because it has anti-microbial properties, which means it can help prevent infections after birth. Keeping the vernix on the baby’s skin can also help regulate their temperature, as ensuring a baby stays warm enough after birth is crucial.
