Wild and Free is a transitional educational program for young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, but that description really only scratches the surface of what this program is really about. Students here are supported while they chase down their goals and develop their dreams into reality. We emphasize home and independent living skills, creative wellness, vocational development, and community engagement and involvement.
Wild and Free was founded in 2018 and exists under the umbrella of The Arc of High Point. It began with only two students and a desire to see a more active and stronger community for those with I/DD. The program director, Sam Baker, saw a huge gap between graduation, adulthood, and employment for this particular group of people. Wild and Free was created to diligently fill that gap.
For most of these young adults, once they leave high school, there are no real expectations set for them to accomplish much else in their adult life. There are many “day programs” out there for them to attend, but unfortunately, a large majority of these programs consist of the participants sitting in front of an electronic device for hours, rather than providing actual life enrichment. These programs are often referred to as “glorified baby sitting” or “adult daycare”.
Wild and Free, on the other hand, seeks to continuously raise the bar for what these programs in the I/DD community look like. A typical day at Wild and Free consists of cooking, cleaning, sewing, vocational training, socializing, fitness, gardening, creative arts, engaging in the community, and more. Every participant has a daily schedule tailored to their specific goals, and is encouraged to independently work through that schedule to the best of their ability each day. The main focus is life enrichment, creative wellness, and independence.
Since the beginning of the program, Wild and Free has seen success with participants getting jobs and returning to school to continue higher education. Most recently, one of our participants, Chance, was accepted into a culinary program at Guilford Technical Community College.
“Before I came to Wild and Free, I just played video games all day and just sat in my room. I felt lonely and trapped in my room. I came to Wild and Free and I got happy and got more energy and was in a better mood. I met new people. I made friends. I set goals and I’m meeting them. One of my goals was to go to culinary school, and I’ve gotten in to culinary school. I didn’t have the confidence to even think about going to college before I came to Wild and Free. I didn’t have the self-esteem to do it. Keep on doing what you believe in, and you’ll get there.” -Chance
Wild and Free today looks a lot different than when it first started. We now have at least 15 participants, and that number increases during the summer when we open our program to those still in high school. Within just one year of operation, we were able to hire another staff member and introduce even more activities into our day. Although we have grown in size, the heart of our program is still the same as it was in the beginning. As long as Wild and Free exists, we will continue to pursue creating a space for young adults in the I/DD community to feel valuable, seen, and supported.
