Early detection saves lives 🤍

We had an incredible Lunch & Learn with Dr. Kelcie Barnts at Trinity Loft Dental, focused on one of the most important — and often overlooked — topics in dentistry: oral cancer awareness and early detection.

Dr. Barnts shared valuable insights on:
✨ Recognizing early signs and symptoms
✨ Identifying high-risk patients
✨ The importance of thorough intraoral & extraoral exams
✨ When to monitor vs. when to refer

Oral cancer can often go unnoticed in its early stages, which is why routine screenings are so critical. As dental professionals, we play a vital role in catching abnormalities early — when treatment outcomes are significantly better.

Thank you, Dr. Barnts, for an informative and impactful session, and to the Trinity Loft Dental team for prioritizing continued education and patient care at the highest level.

Your routine dental visit is more than just a cleaning — it could be life-saving.

📍 Stay proactive. Stay informed. Stay healthy.

Dark or pigmented spots in the mouth can be surprising to patients—and sometimes concerning. The truth is, many are completely harmless, but some can signal something that deserves a closer look.

As oral healthcare providers, recognizing the difference is key. From benign pigmentation to lesions that require biopsy or specialist evaluation, early identification makes all the difference.

Swipe through to learn:
• Common causes of pigmented spots in the mouth
• When a lesion is likely harmless
• Warning signs that warrant further evaluation
• When to refer to an oral pathology specialist

When in doubt, it’s always better to investigate than overlook.

🚨 When Should You Biopsy an Oral Lesion? 🚨

Not every lesion in the mouth is harmless — and knowing when to biopsy can be life-saving.

🔍 Consider biopsy if a lesion:
• Persists longer than 2 weeks
• Has unknown cause
• Shows ulceration without healing
• Appears red, white, or mixed (erythro/leukoplakia)
• Is indurated (firm) or fixed
• Changes in size, color, or texture
• Causes unexplained bleeding or pain
• Occurs in a high-risk patient (to***co, alcohol, HPV risk)

⚠️ Golden Rule:
Any lesion that does not resolve after removing local irritants within 2 weeks should be evaluated for biopsy.

🧠 Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes. When in doubt — don’t wait, biopsy or refer.

📩 Need support evaluating a lesion? The team at Center for Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine is here to help.

HPV isn’t just a women’s health topic — it’s an oral health topic too. 👄

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of the leading causes of oropharyngeal cancers (throat, tonsils, base of tongue). The tricky part? Many people have no symptoms early on.

✨ What you should know:
• HPV is very common — most adults are exposed at some point
• Oral HPV often has no early warning signs
• Persistent sore throat, trouble swallowing, or lumps in the neck should be evaluated
• Regular oral cancer screenings save lives
• Vaccination is a powerful preventive tool

At Center for Oral Pathology & Oral Medicine, we believe early detection + education = better outcomes.
