🚨 When Should You Biopsy an Oral Lesion? 🚨
Not every lesion in the mouth is harmless — and knowing when to biopsy can be life-saving.
🔍 Consider biopsy if a lesion:
• Persists longer than 2 weeks
• Has unknown cause
• Shows ulceration without healing
• Appears red, white, or mixed (erythro/leukoplakia)
• Is indurated (firm) or fixed
• Changes in size, color, or texture
• Causes unexplained bleeding or pain
• Occurs in a high-risk patient (to***co, alcohol, HPV risk)
⚠️ Golden Rule:
Any lesion that does not resolve after removing local irritants within 2 weeks should be evaluated for biopsy.
🧠 Early detection of oral cancer dramatically improves outcomes. When in doubt — don’t wait, biopsy or refer.
