At Milestone Senior Living of Hillsboro, everyone in our care is like family. We know their stories, their hopes, and their dreams. This is what draws us together. Every month, we strive to make a dream come true for at least one resident in our community. Our Dare to Dream recipient for the month of September was Kathryn Sheets!

Kathryn (Kate) has always enjoyed animals which is why she and her husband had a hobby farm outside of Elroy with different animals that she enjoyed taking care of. You often hear Kate talking about animals and whenever we have any furry friends come visit, she can’t wait to have the chance to love on them.
We took Kate to Woodside Ranch outside of Mauston to visit their animals. We were able to see goats, sheep, llamas, bison, horses, and even a couple of zebu. Zebu are a type of cattle that grow a fatty hump on their shoulders. They are used for meat, their milk, and as work animals. After checking out the animals at the ranch, the covered wagon was brought around to us. We climbed aboard, and for the next hour we rode on the trails, admiring the serene atmosphere of the woods around us. This was especially neat for Kate as she is an avid fan of the TV series, Little House on the Prairie.
After the ride concluded, we headed into Mauston for some lunch. We stopped at Mauston Park Oasis Restaurant & Bakery, where Kate was able to enjoy some French toast and bacon, some of her favorite food! We ended the outing with taking home some pumpkin pie for her to enjoy later that day.

Residents had a chance to taste test venison (deer) summer sausage and bear summer sausage during a recent snack social. Most residents stated that they couldn’t taste a difference in the two meats but enjoyed them very much. Thank you to Axton Kuester for the donation of both venison and bear sausage from his most recent harvests. 🐻🧀🦌

Making bars of soap was something none of us had ever tried before. It was fun experimenting with the soap coloring, trying to find the right mix to create the color we were envisioning. Everyone was happy with our first attempt at something like this, and the bars of soap were set out for residents to be able to take and use. We have already made plans to do the same thing in December using Christmas colors, and have challenged ourselves to try layering the colors next time!

Fall is officially here! Residents traveled to Northwoods Apple Orchard located just outside of Mauston this week. They took a wagon ride around the orchard as Brandon spoke about the 14 different apples they grow there. They were invited to get a behind the scenes look at the cooler, where they store the apples after they are picked, and also watched a demonstration on how the apples are washed and sorted with a machine. Residents were able to pick an apple off the conveyor belt to take home with them. Before they left, everyone looked through the store a bit as apples were picked out to bring back to the community so that our culinary staff will be able to make some amazing dessert with them. It was a quiet ride back to Hillsboro as everyone sipped on their warm apple cider and enjoyed the ride.
