I’ve pretty much given up dairy, with the exception of ice cream, on occasion. I hated to admit it, but I just do not feel well when I eat it. I get the puffiness beneath my eyes, stuffiness, and bloating. All tell tale signs.
People often assume that it’s the lactose they are intolerant to. Lactose is the sugar component of dairy.
My issue is with the casein, which is one of the proteins in dairy. Whey is the other protein.
There are two types of casein, A1 and A2. The majority of cow’s milk sold in this country is A1, but you can find A2 milk in stores now. A2 cow’s milk is predominantly from the original dairy breeds (ie; Guernsey) and therefore can be easier to digest for us humans, since human milk is also A2. Other non-cow’s milk like goat, sheep and buffalo contain A2 casein.
I do find that I feel okay when eating small amounts sheep, goat, and buffalo milk cheeses and yogurts, on occasion.
The non-dairy cheese in this photo is the first one that I’ve tried. It’s actually not bad. It’s not highly processed like so any other alternative dairy products and it contains no soy. I’m not sure how often I will eat it, but it’s good to know it’s there.
If you struggle with chronic bloating, stuffiness, sinus infections, and puffiness or dark circles under your eyes, try eliminating ALL dairy for 7 days to see how you feel. If symptoms begin to subside, you are most likely dealing with an intolerance. Then experiment with the A2 options before bringing your regular cow dairy back into your diet. Do any of your old symptoms return?
I LOVE dairy, and I miss it, but not enough to feel poorly.
