What is your starting line?

Mine is today.

My post-cancer body has taken a beating!

I lost muscle and cardiovascular strength.

But guess what? I beat cancer! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

So I have a new starting line.

I’m stepping up and while I haven’t set a foot inside a gym since 2019 (thanks home workouts) I’m stepping up.

Starting fresh.

Good morning from my hotel gym! I woke up early and decided that I’d do a training run… ON VACATION!!!?????

Yes! I try to remain active EVEN ON vacation- here’s why:
✅ I feel best on days when I challenge my body
That’s all.
🙈I don’t exercise to compensate for extra food
🙈 I don’t exercise because I feel “guilty” if I don’t.

Running makes me feel alive 🎉♥️, the end.

Do you ever wake up and feel like something is wrong? Or maybe there’s something you know you need to do, but you are just.dreading.it?🙋🏻‍♀

Welcome to my Thursday.

I woke up with a gnawing feeling.

And when gnawing happens I know it’s time to bust out the feelings wheel and pinpoint exactly what feeling is calling for my attention.

Today it’s worry.

I feel worry in my gut so sometimes I confuse it with hunger, but as soon as I was able to put my finger on it, the gnawing subsided.

For years I ate through these feelings– like I had to escape them.

But today I paused. I thought about how life is 50/50 positive and negative emotions.

How we can’t have yin without yang?

How we don’t need to fix negative feelings, but bring them along for the ride.

I thought about where I wanted to allow space for worry?

Do I want to put it in my pocket or handbag? Put it on my keychain? Wear it as a stone on a bracelet?

Today this stone is worry. I explain this because we often think negative feelings need to be fixed or resolved for life to “go right”. But what if instead we just needed negative feelings to be allowed?

When we allow all feelings, then we can literally solve all our problems because we know there is nothing to run from.

Nothing has gone wrong when the gnawing feeling comes. We just have to notice it, allow it, and make room for it to exist.

Negative feelings are only a problem when we try to avoid them, bury them with food or other substances.

As you go through your day and notice feelings, how do you think life would be different if instead of feeling them and eating, you felt them, paused, and just pretended that you could wrap that feeling up into a little box and bring it with you?

Yesterday I was at 🎯 , and as I walked down the cereal aisle, I observed a mother telling her son that he could choose the cereal “as long as it’s not too… uh, you know.”

The kid picked a few boxes and his mom rejected them. After furiously reading the labels, the mother finally agreed to one of the selections. (For the record- no judgement on mom. I’m not a mother but I know all the moms out there are doing the best they can).

The kid hung his head, and in an act of total rebellion I added the limited edition Lucky Charms that turns your milk green to my basket. 🍀

Then this morning I read this passage out of Intuitive Eating and recalled my own childhood. I remember a slumber party where I ate no less than 🥣🥣🥣🥣of sugary cereal because the brands had been banned at my 🏡 .

I remembered all the times I hid food from my well-intentioned mother to avoid a scolding.

Then I asked myself… What would happen if we just let go of the reigns? 🤔

Our brains tell us that we’d be next in line as a contestant for My 600 Pound life. We’d become one of the Slaton sisters (which given their most recent trip to Gatlinburg, not a bad thing, unless of course you were trapped in the hotel with Tammy) 😄

Our brains go there because they don’t like change and in order to avoid change they go to the worst case scenario.

But what if that wasn’t true at all, and instead of being obsessed with food, releasing the reigns gave us freedom?

When 2021 started I never imagined I’d be finishing the year with a 5 day plant based modified fast after my eighth round of chemo. But here I am, living the dream.😂

No matter what 2022 throws my way, this experience- cancer, chemo, life- has taught me that I always have a choice of how I want to think about anything.

I always get to show up for any assignment as my highest, most loving self. ♥️

I could be thinking “boo boo I don’t get a champagne toast at midnight” 🤷🏻‍♀️

But instead I’m believing that I’m healing my body with rest and incredible nutrition that is going to make me thrive until I’m at least 100 years old.✊

Whatever comes my way for 2022, I can take it like a boss! You can too!

Bring on the new year (and all its challenges, goodness and growth) and have a glass of bubbly for me. ♥️🥂

Q: How are you supposed to track your food when you’re on the road?
A: You do the best you can.

I ate all the chicken (w/o skin), bacony green beans which were bathed in butter, 10 tater tots, 3 T of ketchup and ditched the corn muffin because I couldn’t give a hoot about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

While this is a more calorific meal than I would usually eat I was ravenous and knew my body needed some fuel so I just give my body what it needs and move on.

There was a time when seeing a delicious treat like a Christmas cookie would stir immediate desire and anxiety within me.

I wanted it, but I’d have all the thoughts…
😭Sugar is bad.
😭I’ll get fat.
😭I won’t be able to stop myself!

My brain just couldn’t handle it. So in my resolve to not embarrass myself publicly I’d refrain from the treats in front of others, looking like the poster child of strength and determination all the while knowing what was really going to happen.

🚫 deprive myself,
🚫feel anxious
🚫soothe my woes with a binge.

I’d be guilty and humiliated and wondered why I couldn’t just be normal like everyone else and eat a freaking cookie!!!!!🤦🏻‍♀️

Can you relate???

Here’s what changed.

I started to notice what I was telling myself just before a binge.

Call it your subconscious, your lizard brain, your inner animal or pig, whatever works for you, but it’s that voice that rationalizes the behaviors you don’t really want to do.

It’s the voice that says
- Start Monday
- No one will know
- You’re stressed out and deserve a treat.

Sound familiar?

When I learned to observe these thoughts and not obey them then everything changed. 🦄🪄

When we obey thoughts that don’t serve us, they grow stronger.

When we ask ourselves what we REALLY want in each moment and do that instead, we create change.

Let’s talk volume eating. 😁

If you love Italian food but hate the high caloric price, what do you do?

Find a way to make it work for you.

My husband swept me away to Tahoe for a few days so I could chill out with a change of scenery 🥰❄️ So this meal was easy enough to prep in our rental condo.

I sautéed some lean ground beef, heated up frozen zucchini noodles and tossed it with a pre-made spaghetti and meatballs meal added some extra sauce and topped it with some parm. 👌

This meal took me literally 10 minutes to make and was satisfying and filling. Even loved it.

If you’re not one to love subbing cauliflower rice or zucchini noodles for your carbs, doing a 50/50 mix like this is a great way to get the flavors you love & the filling benefits of extra veggies, without feeling like your sacrificing your love of carbs. ♥️

Making your plan- whatever it is- work for you is what makes it sustainable long-term. Sustainability=success.

On a side note- I got approved to try new foods off my fodmap plan, so I was super pumped that everything in tonight’s meal had no digestive side effects for moi. Yay!🎉🎉🎉
