Farm Stand Update
Our self-serve stand will be paused for the winter and will reopen in the spring. During this time, The Rusty Rake Homestead will be moving to 100% pre-order, prepaid sales. Orders will be taken weekly every Friday with Sunday pickup from 12:00–2:00 PM. Thank you so much for your continued support through the slower season!

I didn’t start The Rusty Rake Homestead just to sell products. I started it to build something meaningful.

This place is about more than baked goods and farm-fresh finds. It’s about creating a spot where neighbors feel welcome and community feels a little closer.

A couple faces behind the flock.

Chico and Reba in all their black and white glory.

Chico is our 10-month-old Whiting True Blue rooster. He started out soft spoken and sweet, and lately he’s stepped into his confidence. He’s right in the middle of “rooberty,” figuring out his role, finding his voice, and testing his boundaries. We’re watching him closely. Feather color is beautiful and he definitely has the traits we like for future breeding, but temperament will always matter more than looks. How he treats his hens and how he behaves with us will decide his future here.

Reba is still a pullet and full of personality. She came into lay a little later than typical for her breed, and her eggs are still on the smaller side, but we adore her. She’s observant, curious, and steady. The kind of hen you just enjoy having around.

For now they share a coop, growing up side by side.

Strong birds. Strong personalities. Always learning.

Sandy, my Starlight Green Egger, laid this beauty. She technically lays olive eggs… but with the heavy bloom she puts on them, they usually look gray or even slate blue.

That outer coating is called the bloom (or cuticle). It’s a natural protective layer the hen adds right before the egg is laid. It helps seal the shell’s pores and keeps bacteria out. Sandy just happens to go overboard with hers 😄

Her shells are also extra gritty from calcium deposits, so they feel like sandpaper. Which makes her name even funnier .
