•back in action•

I’ve been going through a lot lately & have felt the fear of “who am I to act like I know anything when my life feels so off?”

I have realized that I was convincing myself I had to have everything figured out. The reality is wellness & living an integrated & holistic life is a constantly evolving process. It’s not about perfection. It’s about consistency, honesty, compassion, & presence.

So here I am, showing up in all my imperfection. With this in mind, I wanted to share a transformation I have experienced over many years.

When I was young & ill, I became livid whenever someone implied that my emotions had an impact on my health. It felt like someone was blaming me for it all, like it was my fault. It has taken me many years to realize 3 essential truths:
1. Our emotional responses do actually influence our health
2. It’s not anyone’s fault, especially if those emotional responses come from childhood programming/trauma
3. It is in our power to make the choice to change & rewrite the story

Right now I’m reading a book by titled “When the Body Says No”. In the book he states “It is a sensitive matter to raise the possibility that the way people have been conditioned to live their lives may contribute to their illness.”

I’ve realized that my purpose is to approach this topic from the perspective of someone who understands it isn’t about fault or blame or shame. I want to help others drop the shame & instead empower them in the revelation.

Your past is not a life sentence. I’m here to help.

Reach out if you’re interested in talking more about one-on-one coaching to help integrate your shadow-self in order to create lasting life style change, from a holistic and deeply human perspective.

At times, it can feel overwhelming to stay active—especially if you’re dealing with a chronic condition.

I spent many years sedentary before I had the revelation that exercise can actually *help* my pain levels.

This morning, I was woken up by my alarm at 4:30 in order to meet 5 other awesome women for a hike at 5:30am. Even though I wanted to press snooze and my muscles ached upon rising, I got myself up and out of the house. We made it out in time for the sunrise and the views were breathtaking.

One thing that helps me stay active is to opt-outside. Having a purpose that isn’t just fitness helps me stay motivated.

A beautiful view, a new plant you’ve never seen, the breeze on your skin. Your mental health, energy levels, the clarity of your thoughts.

What keeps you motivated?

Bonus: swipe to the last photo for a derpy faced human having a great time, laughing way to loudly far too often (Jk laughing too much isn’t a real thing).

•Staying Connected•

When dealing with chronic health issues, it can be hard to feel connected to a sense of purpose. Days turn into singular battles to just survive. Who has time to think about the bigger picture?

A simple shift in perspective that changed my life was turning my desire to be healthy into a mission bigger than myself. To become healthy, I had to take radical accountability for all my “stuff”, and the more accountable I became, the better I could show up in the world. Never perfect, but simply better than before. I could be a better daughter, sister, friend, partner. Maybe I could even help others who struggled like me one day. The desire to become the best version of myself no longer was purely egotistical—it was for everyone I loved and cared about.

Staying connected to something bigger than yourself comes in many forms. For many, it is a faith practice or religion. For others, it is a mission in the world to enact positive change. And for some, it is a dedication to their interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships.

A good way of finding what it is for you is to:
1. close your eyes, and take 10 deeeep belly breathes, clearing your mind
2. imagine what you want to feel and see more of in the world.
3. let it completely fill you up, like a bright light. Each breath, it pulses inside your heart. Feel the relief and pleasure from this thing existing in greater prominence for not only you, but for those you love.

If right now, all you can focus on is experiencing less pain, or fatigue, allow that to become a mission bigger than yourself that keeps you motivated and committed. There is no wrong path. Because despite its difficulty, it provides immeasurable benefits to think bigger than ourselves.

• meditation & pain management •

Meditation comes in many forms can be utilized for many purposes.

For me, making cakes and art are types of meditation. Riding my bike and dancing are meditations. Sitting on a mat, closing my eyes and focusing on my breath while emptying my mind is meditation.

Meditation is a state of flow in which the brain can actually rewire and restructure itself.

One study from 2018 showed as much, and in this process, the brain can actually become less pain-sensitive. Other studies have shown it can help with creating emotional distance from pain, as well as an increase in natural opioids in the body. At the very least, meditation has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression associated with pain, which in its own way reduces the experience of the pain.

Given all this, where does that leave a person with chronic pain?

Personally, for pain management, I have had the most success with visualization style meditations. There are a number of apps out there, including and , that provide guided meditations, some even specifically for chronic pain management.

There are other styles of meditation, including mindfulness, body scanning, and breath work. There’s a free copy of the Mind Illuminated by John Yates available online. It can be found with a simple google search.

Explore different styles in order to discover which works best for you.

Just don’t give up when one doesn’t work—frustration is natural and understandable, but with chronic illness we must keep moving forward because I promise: you’re solution is out there.

I’m here to help you find it when you’re ready. DM for more information on nutritional coaching offerings.

• coping with a flare •

As anyone with an autoimmune disease knows: Flares. Are. The. Worst.

Stress increases inflammation, & flares are some of the most stressful times for someone with an autoimmune disease. When we are feeling at our lowest, how can we keep showing up for ourselves in healthy ways?

I had a therapist explain to me once that pain does not actually happen in the body. Let me repeat that: 𝑷𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒉𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒆𝒏 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒐𝒅𝒚. It happens in the 𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒏. It is nerves in the body firing & the brain interpreting those messages. Which means pain requires a witness.

When pain occurs in the body and you tell yourself “this hurts so bad”, “I have the worst luck” or anything of that nature, you reinforce yourself as a witness of the pain & it intensifies.

If we can distance ourselves from the pain, even just a little, by no longer telling ourselves stories about the pain, the pain is tangibly reduced. It gets harder to do this as the severity of the pain increases but adopting this as a long-term practice can yield serious results. I’ll talk more about meditation techniques that can help with this in my next post.

I also recommend more passive healing modalities during these times—simply because they are more manageable. A nice Epsom salt bath or foot soak, a heating pad or icepack, massage, lots of rest, healing foods & herbs, a good book, creation, meditation, or deeeep belly laughter. Mixing one or more of these in while binge watching a show can really do wonders.

What tools do you utilize when in a flare?

Expectation Management

While on the path of healing from a chronic illness, it is important to not get ahead of yourself or judge yourself harshly for not already having it all figured out.

I know from my own experiences how harmful it has been to think “this is it; all my problems have been solved!” when I have come across a new healing modality or practitioner. Then when it did not all come together perfectly, I would be crushed.

As a holistic nutritionist, I never want to be part of the reason someone falls into that narrative, a narrative that inevitably ends in heart break and a loss of hope and motivation.

Patience and understanding are some of the greatest gifts you can give yourself--and to truly embody those mindsets, it is important to have healthy expectations.

Expectation management is not the same as resigning or giving up hope for complete recovery—instead, it is a practice of no longer comparing where you are in relationship to anyone else.

It is a practice of honestly looking of exactly where you are at, and then focusing and cultivating a new reality that is just a few pivot points away from where you already are.

Then, once you make that initial manageable change, you can reassess and pick the next milestone. Each time you find success in small changes, a sense of self-efficacy and self-trust is built, which ultimately allows for bigger and more radical changes to occur in the future.

Do yourself a favor and be kind, patient, and compassionate to yourself at every step. I promise, not only do you deserve it, it is essential to your healing.

• Gut Health •

Another thing I recommend to everyone is tending to their gut health. The importance of the gut microbiome can’t be underestimated.

Many regulatory processes in the body are contingent on effective communication between the bacterium in our gut & our brains. They communicate by way of the nervous system, immune system, & hormones. Some bacteria even create neurotransmitters that directly mimic the ones our neurons produce, ie speak to the brain in its own language.

Having a balanced gut can help with a myriad of issues. When our microbiome is off balance, our bodies have a harder time responding to stress, which in turns leads to chronic issues like IBS, anxiety, & autoimmune diseases.

Some simple ways to tend to your gut health are:
· Ferments—eating fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchi, or kefir, imparts new healthy bacteria.
· Digestive Resistant Starch—this kind of starch is found in foods like slightly underripe bananas, tigernuts, onions, & chicory. It becomes fuel for the living organisms found in the gut & are called prebiotics.
· Probiotics—talk to your doctor before starting probiotics & ask them to help pick out a brand that is right for you. A good rule of thumb is to take probiotics that have at least 15 billion cultures wi/ 10 different strains.
· Unrefined & unprocessed—eating whole foods can help keep the microbiome in balance. Processed foods can impede the reproduction & balance of bacterium in the gut, & can even kill good bacteria if consumed extensively.

Pictured above is a cultured (aka full of healthy bacteria) raw vegan lilikoi “cheesecake”—a wonderful way to enjoy a treat while also taking care of the delicate balance in the gut.

• Diet & Inflammation •

I wish more than anything that there was magical singular diet to recommend that could help everyone heal, but the truth is everybody’s body is different and therefore require different things.

One of the very few things that I genuinely believe works for everyone, however, is choosing to eat low-inflammation foods. Inflammation is a natural part of our immune systems’ response, however in modern society—between processed foods, stress, and environmental influences—lots of people deal with chronic inflammation. When chronic, inflammation is a root cause of many diseases, including autoimmune diseases.

Some tenants of this way of eating include:

· Plant slant – whenever possible, chose fresh, organic, local, and seasonal produce. Full of antioxidants, these foods help protect our cells from damage. Eat the rainbow!
· Omega-3s – easily found in fresh fish like salmon or plant sources such as walnuts & chia seeds, omega-3s help regulate inflammatory processes in the body.
· Whole foods—choosing unprocessed foods, including raw nuts & seeds, fruits, veggies, whole grains, herbs, spices, natural sweeteners (like honey & maple syrup), pasture-raised meats, & raw dairy helps reduce exposure to pro-inflammatory ingredients foods.
· Reduce—intake of red meats, processed grains, sugar, & other foods. These are pro-inflammatory and provide no cellular protection against oxidative stress.

Reducing inflammation is key to overall health, and luckily it does not have to involve crazy restrictive diets that ultimately do not last. Instead, its helpful to think of this way of eating as more of a life philosophy.

• no one-size-fits-all •
One way autoimmune diseases need unique & individualized care is diet & exercise. What works for me, or one disease, may not work for you.
However, there are key principles I have learned are true in any care plan—autoimmune or otherwise.
Some key aspects are:
• Fiber—making sure to consume enough fiber in order to regulate digestion.
• Gut health—tending to your gut micro biome is essential.
• No processed food or sugars—cooking at home greatly helps with this task.
• Omega-3s—these healthy fats (specifically DHA & EPA) are vital to overall wellness.
• Plant slant—focus on primarily consuming whole foods.
• Choose cooking oils carefully—I’ll cover why this is important more in future posts.
• Move your body—move it when you can, in ways that feel good and don’t push you into a flare.
• BE KIND, PATIENT, & COMPASSIONATE WITH YOURSELF—even when you don’t do everything on this list. ***
***this is the most important of them all.

• every path is unique •
Hi there, I’m Kate.
I’m here to remind everyone struggling with their health that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. The path towards healing & reclaiming your life isn’t the same as someone else’s—nor should it be.
Personally, it took 19 years & countless attempts to get where I am now. But those attempts weren’t in vain or failed endeavors... rather, they gave me the tools, information, & deep connection to myself that allowed for real, lasting change.
My goal is to help guide others by harnessing their innate intuition & compassionately structured life style changes towards discovering their path.
I did it alone so one day others wouldn’t have to. Care to join me?
