๐Ÿ‘๏ธ February is Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) & Low Vision Awareness Month! ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ

Did you know that Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50? Itโ€™s crucial to understand the types, risk factors, and why early intervention is so important in preserving your vision. Letโ€™s raise awareness and take action!

๐Ÿ”น Types of AMD:
Dry AMD (Non-neovascular) โ€“ The most common form, where the macula (central part of the retina) slowly breaks down, leading to gradual vision loss.
Wet AMD (Neovascular) โ€“ Less common but more severe, characterized by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina, causing rapid vision loss.

๐Ÿ”น Risk Factors:
Age: The risk increases significantly after 50.
Family history: Genetics play a roleโ€”if someone in your family has AMD, you may be at higher risk.
Smoking: Smoking doubles the risk of developing AMD and worsens its progression.
High blood pressure & cardiovascular disease: Conditions that affect blood flow can impact your eye health.
Obesity: Being overweight increases the likelihood of AMD worsening.

๐Ÿ”น Why Early Intervention is Key: Early detection of AMD can prevent significant vision loss! With routine eye exams, your eye care professional can detect the earliest signs of AMDโ€”before symptoms even appear. Early intervention, especially for wet AMD, can help manage and slow down the progression, giving you the best chance at maintaining your quality of life.

๐Ÿ“… Donโ€™t wait for symptoms! If youโ€™re over 50 or have any risk factors, make sure to schedule a comprehensive eye exam today. Early action can protect your vision for the future. Schedule your appointment at https://moaeyes.com/book-your-appointment/ or call 833-MOA-EYES today!

Dry Eye is more than just an annoyance โ€“ it is a disease that can be caused by many different factors. According to the National Eye Institute (NEI), nearly 16.4 million Americans have dry eye disease.

The most common symptoms of Dry Eye Disease include:
ยท Tired eyes
ยท Itchy eyes
ยท Watery eyes
ยท Light sensitivity
ยท Burning or stinging
ยท Blurry or hazy vision
ยท Sensation of having something in your eyes (foreign body sensation)

Anyone can get dry eye, but you might be more likely to have dry eye if you:
ยท Are age 50 or older
ยท Are female
ยท Wear contact lenses
ยท Donโ€™t get enough omega-3 fatty acids
ยท Have certain autoimmune conditions, like lupus or Sjรถgren syndrome

Normally, glands above your eyes make tears that keep your eyes wet. Dry eye happens when your tears donโ€™t do their job. This could mean:
ยท Your glands donโ€™t make enough tears to keep your eyes wet
ยท Your tears dry up too fast
ยท Your tears just donโ€™t work well enough to keep your eyes wet

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an evaluation at MOA to find out the cause of your dry eye disease and learn about our treatment options!

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ Today, on World Diabetes Day, we raise awareness about the connection between diabetes and eye health. Did you know that people with diabetes are at higher risk for eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma?

๐Ÿ”น Diabetic Retinopathy: The most common diabetic eye disease and a leading cause of blindness in people aged 20 and older. High blood sugar can damage the blood vessels in the retina, leading to vision loss and other problems.
๐Ÿ”น Cataracts: Diabetes increases the risk of cataract development, leading to cloudy vision. The leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.
๐Ÿ”น Glaucoma: Diabetes can also increase pressure in the eye, raising the risk for glaucoma. Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.

Early detection through regular eye exams is essential to managing and preventing these complications. If you have diabetes, make sure to schedule your diabetic eye exam with an MOA medical optometrist to preserve your vision.

11/10/2024

๐ŸŒŽ๐Ÿ‘ On World Keratoconus Day, we take the opportunity to raise awareness about keratoconus, a progressive eye disease in which the cornea thins and bulges into a cone shape, causing vision distortion and impairment. As the condition progresses, it can significantly affect visual clarity, making early detection and proper management critical.

One of the most effective solutions for managing the visual distortion and impairment caused by keratoconus, as well as the ocular surface disease or dry eye associated the disease, is the use of custom scleral lenses.

If you or someone you know is living with keratoconus, talk to your MOA medical optometrist about scleral lenses and other treatment options that can help manage the condition effectively. ๐Ÿ‘€ Look for our link in the comments to learn more about scleral lenses!
