Let’s talk about the spiritual discipline and emotional skill of taking every thought captive.
In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul teaches believers to “bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
The truth is, we cannot stop thoughts from appearing. But we can choose which thoughts we hold onto and which ones we release.
Here are some simple ways to practice taking your thoughts captive:
1. Notice the Thought (Awareness)
You cannot capture a thought you don’t recognize.
When a thought appears, pause and ask:
• Where did this thought come from?
• Who is the originator of this thought?
2. Examine the Thought (Discernment)
Not every thought deserves to stay in your mind. Just because it appears doesn’t mean it belongs there.
Test it using the standard in Epistle to the Philippians 4:8:
• Is it true?
• Is it honorable?
• Is it pure?
• Is it worthy of praise?
If a thought does not align with truth or with God’s character, it should not rule your mind. Don’t give it the steering wheel.
3. Reject or Replace the Thought
Taking a thought captive means refusing to let it control you.
Reject the lie and replace it with truth from Scripture.
4. Speak Truth Over Your Mind
Your words reinforce your thoughts. Speak truth over yourself:
• “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.”
• “I will trust the Lord.”
• “My mind belongs to Christ.”
Taking every thought captive strengthens both spiritual discipline and emotional stability. It helps prevent destructive thinking patterns like fear, resentment, and self-condemnation.
Guard your mind. Your thoughts shape your life.
