Today, we honor Susie King Taylor, the first Black nurse to serve in the U.S. Army!

After escaping slavery with her uncle, Susie became a the first Black teacher to openly teach Black children in Georgia. During the Civil War, she served as the first Black nurse for the 33rd United States Colored Infantry Regiment. When she wasn't on duty, she taught soldiers to read and write.

Susie King Taylor not only created healthier communities, but passed her knowledge to ensure that future generations could live better!

This Black History Month, we're featuring nurses who created healthier communities and shaped the future of the nursing profession.

Today, we honor Mary Jane Seacole, who travelled the world bringing treatments and extensive medical knowledge to those who needed them.

During the Crimean War, she created the "British Hotel" after being denied a nursing position with the British War Office. The soldiers held her in such regard, they referred to her as "Mother Seacole."

With deep gratitude, we thank Gloria Moreno, our inaugural Board Chair, for her steady leadership, vision, and commitment during the formative chapter of our organization. Her guidance helped lay a strong foundation that will serve our mission for years to come.

We’re equally excited to welcome Dr. Chara Bowie as our new Board Chair. With more than 18 years of service in Harris County Precinct 2, Dr. Bowie brings a bold, systems-level approach to health equity, community impact, and innovation. Her work advancing access to care and reimagining how government serves communities aligns seamlessly with our vision.
