A major randomized trial found that walking just 40 minutes, 3 times per week can actually grow the part of your brain that controls memory.

Adults over 55 normally lose 1–2% of hippocampus volume each year. But after one year of walking, participants increased hippocampus size by about 2%. The control group who only stretched lost 1.4% in the same time. That’s a 3.4% difference from simple walking.

The walkers also improved their memory scores, and the people whose hippocampus grew the most showed the biggest memory gains. Researchers linked this growth to higher levels of BDNF—a protein that helps brain cells form new connections.

The best part: the exercise wasn’t intense. These were inactive seniors walking at a moderate pace (breathing a bit harder, still able to talk).

The formula was simple:
• 40 minutes per walk
• 3 times per week
• Moderate pace
• 12 months total

Just 120 minutes of walking per week was enough to reverse 1–2 years of age-related brain shrinkage.
