On this planetary arrival anniversary day of mine I debut myself as a birthworker. For those that know, I was very committed to education work for my entire adult life. I still am but it has taken on new texture as a childbirth educator and mkaribishaji wa maisha which is Kiswahili for the welcome committee for life. Consider Kin & Soil for helping you welcome your children safely Earthside.

We have made the transition from a company focused on K-12 education to birth work and we couldn't be more excited! More to follow.

I was told that these children were the wildest of the wild. I was told that they would fight me in the classroom and I would be on my own. I was told that they would cuss and spit at teachers. I was told that they got joy from watching teachers cry. It was all a lie. These students definitely tried to give me a run for my money don’t get me wrong, but once they saw I cared about them they calmed all the way down. This was a picture I took during one of our group project sessions. This group of 5th graders loved to talk and they had many opinions. So instead of me trying to wrangle them in the entire day, I would break it up with the group stuff. They loved my style of teaching and told me on numerous occasions. I would tell them if they didn’t behave, it would get taken away, and they respected that because they knew why I was there. I wasn’t there to humiliate them like all the educators before me. I wasn’t there just for a paycheck, but I was there because I cared and still care about their well being. Children can do a lot for you when they know you care. It’s really that simple.

My second year teaching I started a garden club for the students. There was an issue with students getting in trouble after school with law enforcement. So I asked them if money was not an issue what would they want to do. They said they wanted to grow their own food. I went to my Prinicpal at the time and she gave me zero support. I paid for most of the supplies out of my own pocket. I went around the community and received an in-kind donation of soil from on South Presa St. if it wasn’t for their support, we would not have been able to obtain self sufficiency. We only grew onions and leeks, but they grew. And as they grew, I started to see students who were battling anxiety and shyness come out of their shell.

I am committed to global education. I am dedicated to ensuring the success of children around the world. I am a lifelong learner…I’ve literally been in school all my life 😂.

I graduate with my second Masters this May. I have completed a Fulbright fellowship. I’ve taught in classrooms in the US, Latin America, and Africa. This ain’t play play.

My mother is also an educator, we have some legacy in the game. For those who have just joined the conversation surrounding conscious education, welcome. And I thank you for walking with me as I share my experiences.

This literally happened yesterday...aren't you tired of mass school shootings? The fact that this is even a reality for children in American schools should make you want to pull your children out of this nonsense. All children deserve to be educated in a safe environment. What better place than their own home? Mawazo Academy has a solution.

We are currently open for private tutoring lessons as we prepare to launch our full fledged online homeschool academy for the 23-24 school year. Join us now.

The authorities identified the adults killed in the mass shooting as staff members.
