What is a “colony” in Microbiology? In Microbiology, a “colony” is a group of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms grown on a solid agar medium. The cells plated on this medium grow to form a mass, which can then be duplicated for further use in the lab.

Colony morphology is used to pick out a pure colony—that is a colony grown from a single parent cell. Morphology are the physical characteristics like form, margin shape, elevation, surface texture, opacity, and color.

A little information on Beta Thalassemia minor. I was diagnosed with this blood disorder several years ago. Beta-thalassemia is inherited as an autosomal recessive disease. It is primarily found in South Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, and Southern Europe…very rare in the Latino descent.
Thalassemia is caused by mutations in the DNA of cells that make hemoglobin. My hemoglobin is always between 9-10g/dL. The normal for a female is between 12-15g/dL. Hemoglobin enables red blood cells to carry oxygen. There is no treatment since this is an inherited blood disorder. Having a healthy diet & exercising regularly can help, especially when feeling fatigue (which I need to start doing more often, lol).

Look at this beauty. Well, the color is beautiful but no much the organism. 😅 Two of these are Salmonella & Shigella species growing on the Hektoen Enteric (HE) agar plate. 🧫 Currently starting another validation project. Our lab continues to grow. Stay tuned for more details later. 👩🏻‍🔬 🦠
