🚨 Urgent: Threat to Our Profession 🚨

There’s a deeply concerning development: the U.S. Department of Education is redefining what counts as a “professional degree” under new loan-regulations, and speech-language pathology (SLP) is being left off the list. 

Why this matters:
• The change would cap federal student loan access much lower for SLP students. 
• Without “professional” classification, SLP programs may lose access to the higher borrowing limits reserved for only a narrow set of fields. 
• This could make SLP education less affordable, shrinking the pipeline for future clinicians — just when demand is growing!!!!

What can we do:
1. Raise our voices. Advocate through professional associations (ASHA, state SLP organizations) to push back on the draft regulation.
2. Submit public comments. The Department of Education is in a rule-making period; make sure SLPs speak up.
3. Engage allies. Partner with other allied health fields that are impacted (e.g., OT, nursing, audiology) — there’s strength in numbers.
4. Educate students. Make sure current and future SLP students know about this risk — they may rethink their financial plans otherwise.

• Around 1 in 14 (≈ 7.2 %) U.S. children ages 3-17 have had a voice, speech, or language disorder in the past year. 
• Boys are more likely than girls: ~9.1 % boys vs ~5.2 % girls. 
• Only about 55-60 % of children with a communication disorder received intervention services in the past year. 
• In 2021, the federal EI program (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act – Part C) served more than 770,000 infants & toddlers (birth-2 yrs).

✨ Milestone Monday! ✨
Parents often ask, “Is my child on track with speech and language?”
Here’s a quick look at general milestones for ages 2–5 years old ⤵️

🗣️ Age 2:
• Says at least 50 words
• Starts putting 2 words together (“More juice”)
• Follows simple directions

🗣️ Age 3:
• Uses 3–4 word sentences
• People understand them most of the time
• Can answer simple “who,” “what,” and “where” questions

🗣️ Age 4:
• Speaks in full sentences
• Tells short stories about their day
• Can describe familiar things

🗣️ Age 5:
• Uses detailed sentences
• Understands time words (before, after)
• Speech is clear and easy to understand

Every child develops at their own pace — but if you notice your child isn’t meeting some of these milestones or you have concerns, early support can make a big difference. ❤️💚
