When it comes to Basic Life Support (BLS), mastering chest compressions can be a lifesaving skill, and it's simpler than you might think! Here's a clear guide on how to perform effective chest compressions:
1. **Position Yourself**: If you find someone unresponsive and not breathing, check for responsiveness. If they're unresponsive, call for emergency help and get an AED if available.
2. **Hand Placement**: Place the heel of one hand on the center of the person's chest, then put your other hand on top. Interlock your fingers.
3. **Body Position**: Keep your arms straight and your shoulders directly above your hands. This ensures you can generate maximum force.
4. **Compress**: Use your body weight to push down hard and fast at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute. Aim for a depth of about 2 inches.
5. **Release**: Allow the chest to fully rise after each compression but do not lift your hands off the chest.
6. **Continue**: Keep going until emergency services arrive or the person shows signs of life, such as breathing or movement. If an AED is available, use it as soon as possible.
