Global implications of the Djokovic deportation

No matter which side you are on, the Australian Government vs Novak Djokovic fight painted a very unattractive view of how important the sentiment surrounding the issue of covid vaccinations is in todays democracies.
The Scott Morrison government, like most in the western world, have used every tool in their armories to get people vaccinated. Although the base intention behind such is well grounded, they have told many “half truths” and even a few “lies” to ensure success. The population have been so desirous to see the end of the restrictions the pandemic has caused that they have lapped this all up with out any of the usual review and questioning.
Na matter all the public rhetoric and statements to the contrary, the fact is that Novak Djokovic arrived in Australia legitimately and his status as being un-vaccinated had nothing to do with the reason he was eventually deported!
The immigration minister, Alex Hawke, who actually was the person who signed the documents that cancelled Novak Djokovic’s visa says “That I am assuming he currently has a medical reason not to be vaccinated does not ultimately affect my reasoning.”
He clarifies the overarching argument was that Djokovic’s presence in Australia “may pose a health risk to the Australian community” because it “may foster anti-vaccination sentiment”.
It should be noted that Australia has over 92% of the adult population fully vaccinated which, by any measure is a massive success. It remains very unclear what real benefits this has provided Australians because, as published recently in the Lancet, studies have shown that being vaccinated has limited impact on the spread of the virus. (https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(21)00768-4/fulltext)
In fact, as the virus continues to mutate, there is great questions about the real world benefits for the level of symptomatic illness being hopitalised or even death.
If governments do get challenged, fully, on their decisions to force a vaccine that has not fully passed all tests and reviews to be properly approved – noting the use of Emergency Use regulations – then the respect and trust of the general population can quickly be eradicated. This does not mean that the conspiracy theorists or anti-Vax groups will be proven correct, but simply that those we have voted to lead and direct us have abused that power and the system of government is broken.
As Omicron asks some of these questions and major institutions do studies with uncomfortable conclusions governments will come under greater scrutiny.
It will therefore beg the question irrespective of vaccine status, will I be allowed into that country if I publicly question their actions during the pandemic?

Australia has been held as a leading country in the dealing with Covid-19, but simply locking itself away from the rest of the world was never a long term solution. Let us see how they have fared.

In early December 2021, before the outbreak of Omnicron, Australia was proudly announcing that they had over 75% of the adult population “fully” vaccinated.

This figure grew to over 90% by the end of 2021 when the data showed that there was 1,228 people in hospital with covid of which 176 were in ICU. At this time Australia was recording cases at only 489 per million and deaths averaging 10 per day.

The government, and most media outlets, continued to promote the view that this data was showing the success of the vaccine mandates. Therefore life can go on “relatively” normally.

Sadly, as has been well documented, vaccines do not reduce or limit the spread of the coronavirus.

As of 19 January’s latest data, the government has proudly announced that they are doing so well with the vaccination program that 25% of the adult population has now had the booster shot!

So what has this all meant. Australia now has one of the worst rates of published infections at over 4,000 cases per million (US 2,100 and UK 1,500), the average daily cases is now over 100,000 for the last week.

This has created the sad result that, even though there are high rates of vaccination, hospitalizations have climbed to over 5,300 with more than 420 in ICU with deaths up 5 times the end of the year at least 50 per day!

So the BBC say that vaccines alone won't stop virus - because it's all like Swiss cheese!
Many people are hoping vaccines against coronavirus will be our route to reclaiming our old lives. But scientists say vaccines alone will not be enough and other measures are still needed.

Angela Merkel has turned to Russia for help with coronavirus vaccines after controversially restricting use of the AstraZeneca jab in under-60s.

Overnight it emerged Ms Merkel, together with French President Emmanuel Macron, have discussed possible co-operation on jabs in a joint video conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin said the trio had discussed the outlook for Russia's flagship Sputnik V vaccine being registered across the EU - as well as potential deliveries and joint production of the vaccine inside the EU.

Germany's medical regulator announced on Tuesday it had received a total of 31 reports of rare blood clots in recent recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine. Nine died and all but two of the cases involved women aged 20 to 63, the Paul Ehrlich Institute said.

The issue involving blood clots associated with thrombocytopenia, a low blood platelet count, is the same one which caused many EU countries to temporarily halt the use of the jab earlier this month.

The problem now is that more data is flowing in. On Tuesday, a team of European researchers published a not-yet-peer-reviewed preprint which looked at nine patients in Germany and Austria who developed thrombocytopenia and clots following vaccination.

“The AZD1222 vaccine is associated with development of a prothrombotic disorder that clinically resembles heparin-induced thrombocytopenia but which shows a different serological profile”, they said.

“There is substantial uncertainty about the benefit of providing AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines to adults under 55 given the potential risks” says Dr Shelley Deeks, vice-chair of Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunisation (NACI).

The NACI, which provides guidance on vaccines in the county, has recommended the jab not be used in people under the age of 55 while the issue was investigated. Dr Deeks emphasised that their recommendations came amid new data from Europe which suggests that the risk of blood clots is now potentially as high as one in 100,000 – much higher than the one in 1 million believed before.

According to UK data, the risk of someone between 18 and 49 being taken to hospital after becoming infected with the now dominant UK variant of Covid is around 1,200 in 100,000 (1.2 per cent). The risk irrespective of infection status stood at about a third of that over the last year.

Dr Deeks said most of the patients in Europe who developed a rare blood clot after vaccination with AstraZeneca were women under 55, and the fatality rate among those who develop clots is as high as 40 per cent.

Like Canada, Germany has now decided to restrict the AstraZeneca jab in younger people - despite European regulators saying the benefits outweigh the risks.

Europe is entering a new wave of lockdowns with France, Germany, Poland, Ireland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Switzerland all joining Italy in tightening the rules in order to curb the spread of case numbers that are surging across the continent.
"The main reason for the development of this situation and its acceleration is the British mutation of the coronavirus," Polish Health Minister Adam Niedzielski says.
French Prime Minister Jean Castex said the “epidemic is getting worse”, with the fast-spreading UK strain accounting for about 75 per cent of cases.
The highly contagious variant first identified in the U.K. likely accounts for up to 30% of Covid-19 infections in the United States, White House Chief Medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci said Friday.
He added that the variant, called B.1.1.7, has been reported in at least 94 countries and detected in 50 jurisdictions in the U.S. and that the numbers are likely growing.
New variants are especially a concern for public health officials as they could become more resistant to antibody treatments and vaccines.
What does this mean for the America which has eased many coronavirus restrictions with large parts of the country almost back to normal?
Texas governor Greg Abbott has already declared the state “open 100 per cent,” while thousands of students enjoyed Spring Break in Florida.

As most major European countries have halted the use of AstraZeneca vaccine – why are we surprised?

A cascading number of European countries — including Germany, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain — have joined numerous other countries and suspended the use of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine today over reports of dangerous blood clots in some recipients.
They have stated that the vaccine was being suspended as a precautionary measure.
It is important to remember that none of these countries (like all others around the world) have only authorized it’s use on an Emergency Use basis. It has not undergone all that is required to be able to receive a normal Authorization for Use. Therefore, the authorities must be substantially more cautious than they would in normal circumstances.
The AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine is now facing a crisis of confidence, but this is far more preferable than the state of overconfidence that is being promoted by the UK government and others. Sadly no vaccine is perfect and the reporting of this by governments and media is an outrage to us all.
Vaccination is a great thing. But we must tread carefully and respect the normal processes that have been set up to protect us all – just look back and see what happened when thalidomide was rushed through as a solution to morning sickness.

The list of countries halting the use of AstraZeneca vaccines grows after Denmark was the first to temporarily halt use of the AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of blood clots and one death.
Now twelve other countries—Norway, Iceland, Austria, Estonia, Bulgaria, Thailand, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Italy, Romania Congo and Latvia—have also suspended use of AstraZeneca’s vaccine.
The decisions are a further setback for Europe’s vaccination campaign, which has struggled to pick up speed, partly because of delays in delivering the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The suspensions are the latest trouble for AstraZeneca, which had a public spat with the European Union earlier this year over supply delays and which have also faced concerns about its efficacy.
With trial data showing efficacy that fell short of the Pfizer/BioNtech and Moderna vaccines, many people have been reluctant to take a "second class" shot.
Several European countries also stalled in approving its use for people over the age of 65, with South Africa suspending the vaccine after a clinical trial found that it failed to sufficiently protect against infection with the COVID-19 variant that has swept through that country.

CDC investigation has confirmed that universal masking and avoiding nonessential indoor spaces mitigates the spread of COVID-19.

The report confirms that

1. Mandating masks was associated with a decrease in daily COVID-19 case and death growth rates within 20 days of implementation, and
2. Allowing on-premises restaurant dining was associated with an increase in daily COVID-19 case growth rates 41–100 days after implementation and an increase in daily death growth rates 61–100 days after implementation.

Covid-19 vaccine success won’t eliminate virus risk
Disease modelers advising the U.K. government recently made a sobering projection: 56,000 more Covid-19 deaths by the summer of next year, even if the country tiptoes out of lockdown and the vaccines work.
The study points to the uncomfortable prospect that even with an effective vaccine, the virus will continue to take a toll on society. A relaxation of restrictions over the summer would cause infections to rise in the fall. Even if restrictions aren’t fully eased until August, Imperial College estimates that could result in 56,000 deaths by June of next year. Modeling by the University of Warwick that also informed U.K. government policy reached similar conclusions.
"We cannot escape the fact that lifting lockdown will result in more cases, more hospitalizations and sadly more deaths," British Prime Minister Boris Johnson told Parliament on Monday.
"There is therefore no credible route to a zero-Covid Britain or indeed a zero-Covid world"

02/23/2021

Despite the recent decline in coronavirus cases and continued success with COVID-19 vaccines, it seems we will still be wearing masks for a long time yet.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US coronavirus czar, said it’s possible masks could be needed until 2022.
Fauci’s comments underscore what experts have been saying for weeks: that even as more people get vaccinated, masks are still going to be essential.
His comments were echoed by a new poll published by the New Scientist show that over three quarters of the infectious disease experts believe that mandatory wearing of face masks in shops and on public transport will probably stay in place until at least 2022.
The New Scientist contacted around 200 leading UK epidemiologists, modellers, virologists and public health researchers to see when they think life will return to something resembling normality.
Among the respondents, 45% thought guidance on face masks would stay in place until 2022, with a further 31% saying 2023 or later.
