I will never not say this: exercise doesn’t have to involve gyms or weights or running shoes! Exercise is simply moving your body in a way that requires physical effort.

Sure, that can mean gyms and weights and running shoes. But it can also mean hula hoops and garden gloves and yoga mats. It can be dancing in your kitchen and walking your dog and having s*x!

So many of us have difficult, and often painful, associations with “working out.” If going to the gym or trying to run isn’t enjoyable for you, don’t do them! We’re so much more likely to exercise and move our bodies with love when we enjoy the activities we’re doing.

Yesterday, I felt myself hovering above a bit of a depression spiral. So, while I was still able to (before the depression actually took hold), I went for a bike ride around my neighborhood. I wasn’t aiming for time or distance or calories. I was only aiming to move my body, enjoy sunshine, and get out of my head. And I achieved all of my goals. Getting a “workout” was just a cherry on top. That’s exactly how working out needs to feel: enjoyable, nurturing and fun.

I’m launching a 3-week challenge on May 15 to help you – and me – find sustainable habits for healthier, happier bodies, minds and souls through practices like movement that makes you happy. It’s 100% free, 0% strings. And we’ll do it together.

A little late, but I wanted to make sure I shared this minute meditation this week. Partly because several people have shared that they’ve missed the Monday Minute during my mental health sabbatical-of-sorts, and partly because it’s been heavy on my heart lately.

So often, we hold onto things — habits, practices, routines, jobs, foods, workouts, relationships — far past the point of them serving us. Letting go of something can be scary and sad and life-altering, but it can also be healing and beautiful and life-changing.

So, repeat after me: I let go of what no longer serves me 💖

Well hey there.

Happy Spring 🌷

I realize that I missed an entire season when it comes to posting. Unfortunately, it was a season of house woes, a car accident, trauma work, panic attacks and depressive episodes.

I’m beyond grateful to be able to take breaks from certain stressful areas of my work (yes, social media can be stressful for me) when my mental health needs it. Throughout my corporate career, I’ve had numerous instances when I was afraid my mental illness and invisible disabilities would get me fired. A few times, they almost did.

I’ll save my rant on corporate America and its treatment of employees for another day, and instead reiterate the importance of listening to ourselves - our minds and our bodies - on a daily basis. Tuning into yourself allows you to take the breaks you need, or go balls to the wall with productivity when you can. Honoring where we are at any given moment heals every part of us, and allows us to find whole body health.

This weekend’s tragedy at Astroworld is heartbreaking, terrifying, and so many other feelings I haven’t begun to process. I can’t and won’t pretend to know what the victims, their families, and festival-goers are experiencing right now, but I know I need affirmations for safety today. When your yoga studio gets vandalized in the middle of the night, you take your class outside.

So many things happen to us and around us that are completely out of our control. What we can control, though, is our reaction. We get to choose our mindset in difficult times. We get to choose what we let into our lives and how. And we get to choose whether we let hard situations weigh us down or spur adaptability.

I know the idea of things happening “outside of our control” can make some people feel pretty dang powerless. But, if you ask me, there’s no greater power we can give ourselves than choosing whether we let externals discourage or empower us.
