PEERS® for Adolescents is an evidence-based social skills intervention for motivated teens and parents who are interested in making and keeping friends.

Teens and social coaches (including parents and other caregivers) attend 14 weekly group sessions.

During each group session, teens are taught social skills through didactic lessons and role-play demonstrations, and practice these skills during group socialization activities

Social coaches attend separate sessions simultaneously and are trained how to assist teens in making and keeping friends.

A support system is made up of individual people who provide support, respect, and care. These are people who are in your corner. They do not judge you or ridicule you. They provide feedback that is genuine and in your best interest. Their support is not self-serving.
Are your friends your support system?

What is PEERS for Adolescents?
The PEERS approach teaches skills using specific rules and steps of social behavior through lessons, role-play demonstrations, and assignments. Caregivers (including parents and other family members and family friends) are also provided tips to help participants use their skills in the real world. Topics include: friendships, conversational skills, electronic communication, organizing a get together, and even bullying. With all of the social distancing - wouldn't it be nice to see your teen emerge after this time ready to socialize once things are more stable?

This week, we celebrate the accomplishments of all of the participants in this PEERS cohort. We talk about next steps, and ways to utilize PEERS after graduation, while also having the most social environment possible - a party!

Follow along with us as we share what our current PEERS cohort is working on this week!

Have you ever been the target of rumors and gossip?

This week in PEERS, our group will discuss how to handle being the subject of rumors and gossip, which are a form of verbal bullying. Studies have shown that over 60% of individuals on the spectrum have experienced teasing and bullying. We will teach you strategies that take the power away from these rumors and the bullies that spread them.

Stay tuned for our most exciting session of the season, our week 14 graduation!

Week 12 - Handling Disagreements

Follow along with us as we share what our current PEERS cohort is working on this week!

Have you ever lost a friend after a disagreement? Do you think that outcome could have been prevented?

This week in PEERS, we talk about a subject that seems to be a dying skill - how to handle disagreements. Most friends will find themselves in a situation in which they disagree, and we may say or do things that end a friendship when there are better ways to find common ground. In many cases, when disagreements are handled correctly, friendships may even become stronger.

Stay tuned for session 13, when we discuss rumors and gossip!

Week 11 - Bullying and Reputations

Follow along with us as we share what our current PEERS cohort is working on this week!

Have you ever made a mistake, and it still seems to affect the way your peers treat you, even years later? Have you ever been the subject of verbal, physical, or cyberbullying?

This week in PEERS, we discuss ways to handle being the target of bullying. Many school districts focus on what to do as a group to prevent bullying, but drop the ball when it comes to teaching us how to respond when it is actually happening to you. The results of this bullying can be life changing, and may lead to changing schools or even mental health crises such as anxiety or depression. We also review ways to change your reputation if you’ve made mistakes in the past.

Stay tuned for session 12, as next week we will discuss how to handle disagreements.

This week in PEERS, we discuss the ways we can respond when people say things that hurt our feelings.

Stay tuned for our next session, where in week 11 we cover bullying and reputations?

Week 9 - Good Sportsmanship

Follow along with us as we share what our current PEERS cohort is working on this week!

Do you ever find yourself getting upset when you lose a game playing with your friends?

This week in PEERS, we cover sportsmanship. Playing games is such a wonderful way to build relationships with others. Unfortunately, some of us struggle with getting too competitive, such as being a sore winner or a sore loser, and we end up pushing people away instead of getting closer. We review several common missteps that may occur when playing games, and get you back on track and having fun with your friends.

Stay tuned for session 10, where we discuss how to handle rejection, teasing, and embarrassing feedback.
