Texas tried a mid-decade do-over on the congressional map that would have quietly cut the power of Black and Brown voters. Yesterday, the NAACP and Lawyers’ Committee sued, MALDEF and LULAC, fought for Latino voters, and the Legal Defense Fund led a whole coalition of Black-led orgs, churches, sororities, and voting rights groups to file briefs explaining exactly how this was racial gerrymandering.
A three-judge panel in El Paso listened. Judge Jeffrey Brown and Judge David Guaderrama agreed there was ‘substantial evidence’ that Texas sorted voters by race, not just politics, and blocked the map for 2026. Judge Jerry Smith dissented.
For Black women in Texas, this is not just ‘politics.’ This redistricting is not just moving lines. They are deciding whether your side of town has power or just participation.
