One in three adults, and now one in three teens, are living with prediabetes and don’t even know it. This silent threat can quietly progress to type 2 diabetes within just five years, if ignored. But prediabetes is reversible.

According to Cynthia Lew, RN, a certified diabetes care and education specialist, early detection and small, consistent lifestyle changes can completely rewrite your health story.

“We need to make people more aware of prediabetes, because you can prevent this disease,” Lew said. “You have control to prevent it now, versus after the diagnosis when it becomes much harder to manage.”

When lifelong educator and former teacher of the year Lakenya Perry-Allen began noticing subtle changes in her body, she thought it was just menopause. What she didn’t expect was a cancer diagnosis. Doctors discovered a rare and aggressive form of endometrial cancer called uterine carcinosarcoma.

Her journey led her to Ioana L. Bondre, MD, MPH, a gynecologic oncologist with UT Physicians, who developed a treatment plan designed to fight the disease and fit Lakenya’s life as an educator and mentor.

Even as she faced surgery and rounds of chemotherapy, Lakenya’s priority was her students.

“The first thing I asked was, ‘Can I still go to work?’” Lakenya said.

With every treatment, Lakenya shows up with grace, humor, and a fighting spirit, inspiring her students and community with her hope.
