For nearly ten years the entrance to Sunny Creek Ranch has been without a single issue. Now, with the new neighborhood and increased traffic, our flag was purposefully run over and broken. It’s hard not to feel sad about that.

For our veterans, that flag marks more than an entrance. It represents service, sacrifice, and the freedoms they fought to protect. We will replace it and raise it again. With more cameras. 🇺🇸

Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. Because of the support from Petco Love, we’re able to continue offering no-cost equine therapy to veterans and first responders who need a place to breathe, reset, and heal. This investment ripples through families, through our ranch, and through a community that cares deeply about those who serve. Thank you, Petco Love, for believing in the power of the horse-human connection

Out here, trust is built without saying much at all.

A veteran steps into our pasture carrying years of life and experiences that don’t always have words. The horse meets them right where they are. No rank. No expectations. Just being present.

With time, something genuine takes shape. Horses respond with honesty. Veterans notice when a horse relaxes, walks away, or chooses connection. Those quiet moments matter, and they don’t stay here, they carry into life beyond the ranch.

Some of the most powerful lessons at the ranch come from quiet moments where connection grows through patience and presence.

In our human relationships, showing up fully can transform understanding and trust. Be present. Notice. Connect.

There’s something special about spending time with a horse out in our open pasture. They notice our energy before anything else and show us how to be calm, clear, and honest. They teach boundaries, trust, and the value of simply being present. Every session reminds us why this work matters.

What an honor to have two former Post Commanders of VFW 4709 visit Sunny Creek Ranch! They came out to see firsthand how equine therapy can make a difference for our veterans. We’re so grateful for their support! It is a true blessing. VFW Post 4709

Our History

Shannon Novak founded the first Eagala Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Program for veterans in Montgomery County Texas in 2016. She became Eagala Certified in 2016 after witnessing the impact horses made on her husband’s life after serving 20 years in the USAF. In 2020, her program earned the distinction as an Eagala Military Services Provider, the only certified program of its kind in SE Texas. She and her husband raised two beautiful kids in the midst of multiple combat deployments and duty station changes. It was through these difficult times that she developed an unwavering love and admiration for veterans and their families. She has followed her passion to serve veterans and their family members ever since. Through years of hard work, grit, and perseverance, she has facilitated hundreds of veteran equine therapy sessions along with her team, Marla Neely LPC and Robert Knapick Ph.D.. The team is growing and now facilitating on a private, 10 acre ranch in Montgomery, Texas called Sunny Creek Ranch. Sessions are confidential, private and provided at NO COST to veterans, first responders, and their families/caregivers. Because Sunny Creek Ranch is veteran operated, the unique challenges that our heroes face is understood. www.sunnycreekranch.com
