Distinguished guest speaker: Dr. Douglas Thornton, PharmD, PhD, BCPS.

“From Evidence to Action: Addressing Opioid Use Disorder in Texas"

Before joining UH College of Pharmacy, Dr. Thornton practiced as a board-certified clinical pharmacist while
completing his Ph.D. in Health Services and Outcomes Research at West Virginia University. Before finishing the Ph.D.
in 2017, he graduated from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy with a professional pharmacy degree
(Pharm.D.) and completed a post-graduate year-1 pharmacy practice residency at Saint Mary's Medical Center in
Huntington, W. Va., where he saw opioid abuse destroying lives and families first-hand. His research focuses on
optimizing the management of pain and opioid use disorder though the effective use of medications and related health
care services. Through his opioid-related research projects, he has worked with patients, pharmacists, law enforcement
officers, and faculty as well as undergraduate, professional, and graduate students. He is currently working with multiple
federal and state organizations to prevent prescription drug misuse in Texas and beyond.

2026 Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month
Substance Use Disorder Treatment Month (Treatment Month), which is observed in January, serves to support:

People contemplating or seeking help for their substance use
Practitioners treating or considering treating substance use disorder
Friends, family, and loved ones of those with substance use conditions
By raising awareness of treatment, including medications to treat substance use disorders, SAMHSA seeks to:

Eliminate stigma surrounding treatment, including medications used to treat substance use disorders
Encourage those on their treatment and recovery journey
Promote best practices such as screening, intervention, and treatment of substance use disorders by health care providers. More information at https://www.samhsa.gov
