Our newest Social Policy Report highlights the importance of prioritizing sleep health in foster care. Although federal law requires that each child in foster care receive “safe and proper” care, no federal or state policies address sleep health per se. We therefore offer four evidence-based and trauma-informed policy considerations to inform states’ policies to protect and promote foster children’s sleep health and development.

In a study presented this week at , we found that nearly one half of a large national sample of foster caregivers reported giving a child in their care melatonin. These findings are alarming since **not a single controlled study** has examined whether melatonin is effective or safe for children with a history of trauma.

Our results also showed that, compared to children not given melatonin, children taking melatonin were more likely to have younger foster caregivers and spend more time in their current foster home.

Clearly we need to know more, starting with information about safety!

A new study to be presented at SLEEP 2024 found that it is common for foster caregivers to give melatonin to their child.
