We're not just #1 in cardiology—we're at the forefront of medical innovation.

We currently offer the EV-ICD device, a type of defibrillator, to pediatric patients, making us one of the few hospitals in the U.S. to do so. And pediatric cardiologists, including our beloved Dr. Howard, have not only implanted this device—but are seeing positive results in pediatric patients.

🌟 Breaking records, healing hearts 🌟

This summer, our Heart Failure & Transplant team celebrated something extraordinary: more children than ever before were discharged and got to star in their own “going home” parades put together by our child life specialists, some after more than 900 days inpatient.

As one of the largest pediatric heart transplant program in the nation—and one of the best in the world—our team is setting records not only in the number of transplants performed, but in the quality of care and outcomes our patients achieve.

This comes at a special time as Dr. Spinner is now appointed as the medical director for the program, continuing the legacy created by Dr. Dreyer.

To our patients, families and incredible team: thank you for making this record-breaking summer possible. 💖

He’s called “Axell Strong” for a reason. 💪

Last Thanksgiving, Axell came down with a cold. But what started as a cough and runny nose turned into trouble breathing. His parents rushed him to our hospital, where they learned something unexpected: Axell had severe myocarditis, or inflammation of the heart’s muscle.

Axell’s condition was critical. His myocarditis evolved into severe cardiomyopathy and he was placed on the transplant list. In the meantime, he received different treatments to support his heart, including a Berlin pump, ECMO and even a ventilator to help him receive oxygen.

By April, doctors noticed his heart was rapidly improving. Even without the pump, his heart was stable. He was listed as inactive on the transplant list, and by June, Axell returned home. 🫶

The family is overjoyed. Not only because of the incredible care they received at our hospital, but because Axell is finally back home and thriving after such a tough journey.

“He plays with our dogs, visits family and goes on outdoor adventures wherever he can,” said Axell’s parents, Tayler and Tommy. “He’s happy, kind, wild and wonderful—chest scars and all. We call him our little Axell Strong.”

We have a Williams Syndrome clinic because of Ben and his brother. 👨‍⚕️

When Ben Jacobs, PA, was growing up, his little brother Jimbo was diagnosed with Willams syndrome, a rare genetic condition that causes, among other symptoms, aortic stenosis and a gregarious, open personality.

But Ben didn’t understand the complexity of Jimbo’s condition until he watched Jimbo undergo heart surgery.

That moment inspired Ben to get into medicine, and later, found our Williams Syndrome Clinic—a one-stop shop for Williams patients, with a network of supporting physicians and specialists.

And it’s all because Ben saw the need for a clinic, then did something about it. Way to go, Ben!
