I’m seeing a lot of posts about how the new year begins in Spring. And although this makes sense, especially when you notice the names of the months being off number wise (Sept =7, Oct =8, ect). And some say there were originally 13 months, each 28 days, and that our time has been changed and manipulated in ways that go against nature. I think it’s fascinating. And it makes sense. AND I still feel that the Winter Solstice is the end and the beginning. It marks the northern point of the wheel of the year, technically the beginning of Winter here in the northern hemisphere. And so it marks the death of the year, and for a few days the sun rises and sets in the same place before it begins to move again, hence the rebirth of the Sun being celebrated for millennia (sorry Jesus historians “know” your real birthday and this ain’t it!) and the days begin to become longer again. In these dark months of winter we are called to rest, nourish ourselves, and dream. And yet the sun grows stronger everyday, although we can’t feel it yet. 🤰 And here is my perspective. That life begins in this darkness. Just as life begins at conception, in the dark of the womb, in our hearts and minds, in the unseen realms. A seed must be planted to sprout, protected by the feminine dark and wet soil, until the light brings warmth and inspires growth. Although we may not be taking action yet, we may not see the creation yet, here it begins…in Winter. Gestating through the months to come, until finally in Spring we begin to see our creations come alive with action, movement, outward growth. If you’ve ever had a baby or grown a garden, you understand that much happens before sprouts and infants are visible. So although I agree that we must retire the idea that Jan 1st is a time to spring into action and be renewed, I do still see this as a beginning. Yes, it’s a time to rest, to begin to dream, to plant seeds for what is to come, in whatever ways feel right for us personally. Let us remember to take time for sacred pause and consideration before we jump into action. Let us understand that life begins in the darkness, the void, the womb.
