20/11/2025

In light of the recent Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) outbreak in Texas, I am reminding all clients of the importance of disease prevention protocols. I will not be traveling to do PEMF for 14 days. I will not be using equipment on horses to avoid any form of contamination. Thank you for your understanding. Those who have scheduled sessions- I will reach out to reschedule.

This virus is highly contagious and can cause respiratory illness, fever and serious neurological complications. Additional symptoms to watch for include:

- Nasal discharge or coughing
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty defecating or urinating
- Weakness or stumbling

Recommended preventative measures to maintain strict biosecurity include:

- Limiting visitors and isolating any horse that has attended recent events

- Disinfect all equipment, stalls and any highly trafficked areas

- Do not share tack, grooming tools, buckets or trailers

- Take your horses temperature twice a day

At Rockin M PEMF & Wellness Therapy , I am committed to safeguarding your animals with the highest standards of care and biosecurity.

If you notice any of the above symptoms in your horse or have additional questions, please reach out to your vet.

Edited to add:
BVEH NAVASOTA HAS NO CASES ONSITE IN NAVASOTA. It is safe to bring your horse for their normal appointments, we will have additional biosecurity protocols before and in between appointments. We are working to set up an offsite location to triage potential sick horses. We will have updates tomorrow for you. Dr. Buchanan will go live here on Facebook at 8:15am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

BVEH Advisory:

EHV-1 Cases in Horses Returning From a Recent Event

Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals wants to notify horse owners that we are aware of multiple confirmed cases of EHV-1 in surrounding hospitals, and several suspected cases including several horses with neurologic signs (EHM) currently being diagnosed in the barrel horse community. BVEH has not admitted and is not treating and EHV or EHM cases.

The State of Texas Animal Health Commission is aware of the outbreak.

At this time, 5–10 horses are known to us to be sick, but the true number is likely higher as many cases go unreported.

What Horse Owners Should Do Right Now:

1. Keep all horses at home!
Please avoid hauling, clinics, lessons, shows, or mingling horses for the next several weeks until more information is available.

Movement is the #1 factor that spreads EHV-1.
________________________________________

2. Check temperatures twice daily!
Fever is usually the first sign (often before nasal discharge or neurologic symptoms).
• Temp at or above 101.5°F = call your veterinarian.
________________________________________

3. Notify your veterinarian immediately if your horse exhibits:
• Fever
• Weakness or incoordination
• Standing with hindlimbs wide
• Tail tone changes
• Difficulty urinating
• Lethargy or decreased appetite

Early intervention improves outcomes.
________________________________________

4. Discuss treatment options with your veterinarian.

For febrile or exposed horses, your vet may recommend:
• Valacyclovir
• Aspirin or other anti-thrombotics
• Anti-inflammatories
• Supportive care

(These should only be used under veterinary direction.)
________________________________________

5. Biosecurity matters.
• Do not share water buckets, hoses, tack, grooming tools, or stalls.
• Disinfect trailers, thermometers, and crossties.
• Isolate any horse with fever immediately.

About Vaccination.

Current evidence shows vaccines do not prevent EHM, but they can reduce viral shedding and shorten viremia, which lowers barn-wide spread and is important to the community.

Boosters are helpful when:
• A horse was vaccinated > 90 days ago, or
• You are preparing for high-risk environments (events, hauling, mixing populations).

What the research shows:
• Booster vaccination increases IgG1 and IgG4/7, the antibody classes linked with limiting viremia.
• Reduced viremia = reduced likelihood of severe disease and decreased transmission.
• Boosters are most effective in younger horses, previously vaccinated horses, and non-pregnant horses.

Vaccines do NOT stop a horse already incubating EHV-1 from developing signs, and they do not eliminate the risk of neurologic disease. For horses already exposed or febrile, do not vaccinate until cleared by your veterinarian.
________________________________________

We Will Continue to Update You!

BVEH is actively monitoring cases and communicating with veterinarians across Texas and neighboring states. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. If your horse is showing fever or any neurologic signs, please contact your veterinarian or call BVEH immediately.

Please ask any questions in this post and we will work to answer them quickly. Stay tuned for additional updates, including a Live Q and A with Dr. Ben Buchanan tomorrow (Wednesday).

We have documents on our website www.bveh.com specific to EHV and biosecurity. Additional resources included below.

Stay safe, monitor closely, and thank you for helping limit the spread.

Ranger's previous owner accidentally did an intra-arterial injection of Banamine, causing him to have a seizure and sustain vision loss. I am working with his new owner; alongside his vets, to see what we can do to help this sweet boy and hopefully restore some of his vision! He got the works...full body, then I targeted his eyes.

👉️Vision loss in these cases can occur when the neurological event directly affects the areas of the brain responsible for vision or when blood flow to the eye is compromised. An occlusion in the ophthalmic circulation can lead to retinal arterial ischemia, meaning the retina isn’t receiving adequate blood supply, which may result in partial or complete vision loss.

PEMF Benefits in the Context of Equine Vision Loss:
🔹️Improved Circulation and Oxygenation: Research suggests that PEMF can induce arteriolar dilation via a nitric oxide-dependent mechanism, which increases microvascular perfusion and tissue oxygenation. This could theoretically benefit cases of retinal arterial ischemia by enhancing blood flow to the affected area, although this is not specifically studied for the equine retina.
🔹️Anti-inflammatory Effects: PEMF therapy has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation in general. In cases of brain impact, reducing inflammation could potentially mitigate secondary damage that might affect visual pathways.
🔹️Cellular Healing and Regeneration: PEMF stimulates cellular function, which supports natural healing processes and may aid in cell regeneration. This could be beneficial for tissue recovery in the brain or surrounding the eye.
🔹️Safety and Non-Invasiveness: PEMF is a non-invasive, drug-free therapy considered safe for most horses, with few reported side effects. This makes it a potential adjunctive option alongside traditional veterinary treatments.

PEMF for Equine Wellness

Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy helps improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and support overall body balance. For horses, this makes it useful not just for injuries, but for general wellness, performance, and recovery.

✅ Wellness Benefits

• Improved circulation-
Enhances blood flow and oxygenation throughout the body.
• Muscle relaxation-
Helps soften tight or overworked muscles, improving comfort and range of motion.
• Stress reduction-
Many horses become calm and relaxed during sessions, supporting nervous-system balance.
• Joint comfort-
Supports healthy joint function and mobility—especially helpful for older horses or hardworking performance horses.
• Faster recovery-
After training or hauling, PEMF helps flush out metabolic waste and supports quicker recovery.

Sweet Sonny getting the works to help with a suspensory injury...and we had quite the audience!

🌟 How PEMF Helps Horses with Suspensory Injuries 🌟

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy) is a powerful, non-invasive tool that can support healing and comfort in horses dealing with suspensory ligament injuries. Here’s how it helps:

✅ Reduces inflammation around the injured ligament
✅ Boosts circulation, bringing oxygen + nutrients to speed repair
✅ Supports lymphatic drainage, helping reduce swelling
✅ Relieves pain and soreness, allowing the horse to stay more comfortable
✅ Promotes tissue regeneration, supporting stronger healing

Whether your horse is on stall rest, starting rehab, or recovering from a chronic suspensory issue, PEMF and Red Light can be a great addition to their care plan—always alongside your vet’s guidance.
